Speedway to hold races on two nights this week

After another rainout, Sharon Speedway is set for two upcoming big nights of racing. It all gets underway this Saturday night with another Menards “Super Series” race featuring the “410” Sprint Cars. Then on Monday night, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will compete in the “Steel Valley 50.” Race time is 7 p.m. both days.

On Saturday, the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply “410” Sprint Cars will race for $3,000 to-win, $250 to-start, and will be joined by the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars, HTMA/Precise Racing Products RUSH Sportsman Modifieds, and the Summit Racing Equipment Econo Mods. It’s Armed Forces Night as all veterans and active serviceman will be admitted free into the grandstands for general admission.

On Monday, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will return for the second straight year.

Bova inducted into NOBCA Hall of Fame

Former Canfield baseball coach Phil Bova was inducted into the Northeast Ohio Baseball Coach’s Association’s Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place at Canal Park in Akron.

Bova was the program’s first coach in 1973. He began coaching at Woodrow Wilson High School the previous year, leading Woodrow Wilson to its first district finals appearance. He was the Cardinals head coach from 1973-87 returning as an assistant coach 1998 to 2001.

After experiencing a losing season in their first year, his teams had winning seasons in thirteen consecutive seasons with 243 wins and 119 losses. Bova’s teams won eight league championships, eight sectional titles and four district championships.

Bova also coached Little League, Pony, Colt and Class B teams, winning State and Regional championships. His Levi’s Class B team won the NABF championship in 1984.

Coach Bova was selected as the Mahoning Valley Coach Of The Year four times.

Locals miss the cut at Barberton Brookside

Brookfield’s Justin Atkinson and Salem’s John Popa finished tied for 14th and 16th repectively at the The Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour at Barberton Brookside Country Club on Wednesday.

Atkinson shot a 10-over 82 while Popa finished the two day event with an 11-over 83 in the Boys 16 to 19-year-old division.

Drew Dosch to play in IL All-Star game

Former Youngstown State infielder Drew Dosch will play in the International League All-Star game July 11 at Huntington Park in Columbus.

Dosch is a third baseman for the Norfolk Tides, the Baltimore Orioles’ Class AAA affiliate.

Dosch, a seventh round pick by the Orioles in the 2013, is eighth in the International League in batting average (.299) and tied for 10th with 18 doubles.

He was named First-Team All-Horizon League in 2012 and 2013.

The Sunshine Benefit to host golf outing

On July 21st, The Sunshine Benefit will host a golf outing at Lakeside Golf Course in Lake Milton followed by a steak dinner, chinese auction, and entertainment at Magilla’s Sports Bar and Grill in Austintown. All proceeds will go to Rachel (Feher) Sheridan of Boardman to help pay for costs associated with her treatment for cancer.

The golf outing is a three-person scramble. Registration begins at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. There is a $225 fee per team. This fee includes: greens fees, cart, continental breakfast, drinks and lunch at the turn and a steak dinner with all the trimmings. The steak dinner will begin at 2:30 p.m. and includes a “made to order” steak, corn on the cob, baked potato and much more. (Those not interested in golfing are welcome to purchase tickets for the steak dinner which are available for $30 each or two for $50). Prizes will be awarded for the hole events, the 50/50 drawing and a basket raffle.
