Eastern Gateway signs 10 recruits

The Eastern Gateway Community College Gators have secured commitments from 10 players for the upcoming season.

The group has seven players with local ties and three transfers.

Recent high school graduates include: Jacob Johnson, a pitcher from Cuyahoga Falls; Jeremiah Papa, outfielder from Austintown Fitch; pitcher Zachary Walker of New Castle, Pa.; pitcher Logan Torma of East Liverpool; infielder Garrett Mihalik, Western Reserve; and Colgan Knox, infielder from Ursuline High School.

Also committing was outfielder Gavin Strines, a 2016 Boardman graduate.

Transfers are: outfielder Aaron Woodberry (Cardinal Mooney, 2016) of OSU-Lima; Noah Laster (Jackson-Milton, 2017), a pitcher-catcher from California (Pa.) University; and third baseman Grant Williams (Warren Harding, 2017), Cuyahoga Community College.

Curbstone Coaches to honor champions

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

The Curbstone Coaches will honor Mahoning Valley high school state championship athletes and teams on Monday at noon during a luncheon at the Avion Banquet Center on Western Reserve Road.

The honorees are: Dominic Perry of Crestview (Division III shot put); Izzy Kline of Newton Falls (Div. III shot put); Jamynk Jackson of Valley Christian (Division III 200 meters); Jackson, Brandon Paige, Lohron Brown, Terrance White of Valley Christian (4x200 relay); Champion softball team (Div. III); and the South Range baseball team (Div. III).

The public as well as family and friends of the state champions are welcome to attend.

Sharon Speedway events rained out

Continual rain in recent days forced Sharon Speedway to cancel Saturday’s racing program.

The rainout marks the fifth in the past seven Saturdays, the seventh in 11 scheduled race events, and ninth overall in 13, counting the two lost open practices to open the month of April.

July 2 will be the rescheduled “Steel Valley 50” featuring the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in a $12,000 to-win event along with the HTMA/Precise Racing Products RUSH Sportsman Modifieds.

Former Steelers OT to announce Vet program

Former Pittsburgh Steelers left tackle Jon Kolb will announce a new program to help veterans on Tuesday at noon at the AMVETS Hall.

Kolb is executive Director of Adventures in Training with a Purpose (ATP).

The mission of ATP is to confront health and movement related issues for veterans without cost to the veteran. The goal is to advance the ability of veterans to experience a healthy functional life.

ATP is dedicated to improving veterans quality of life issues through training with a purpose — to overcome personal limitations and perform the tasks of daily living.

All veterans are encouraged to attend and learn of the assistance available from ATP.

Houlihan wins 1,500 meters race

DES MOINES, Iowa

Shelby Houlihan grew up in Sioux City admiring fellow Iowan and middle-distance star Jenny Simpson.

Houlihan just might be poised to pass Simpson as America’s next great hope at 1,500 meters.

The 25-year-old Houlihan stormed past Simpson, 31, to win the 1,500 on Saturday at the USATF national outdoor championships at Drake Stadium— Simpson’s hometown track.
