Schedule:

9 to 10 a.m.: Hiking tour.

10 to 11 a.m.: Kayak tour.

11 to 11:30 a.m.: Purple Martin.

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.: Lunch.

1 to 2:30 p.m. Birds of Flight.

2:30 to 3 p.m.: Birdhouse painting for kids.

3 to 4 p.m.: Hiking tour.

Home defense

Niles

The Western Reserve Fish & Game Association, 1058 W. Third St., will have a Home Defense Safety class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Saturday.

The club will provide all equipment and lunch for this informative review of firearms, alarms, passive first-floor enforcements, surveillance equipment and more, all geared toward making you safer in your home. There will be live fire on the club’s indoor range. Weather permitting, there also may be shooting on the outdoor range.

This is a co-educational program. The all-inclusive price is $50. The program is conducted by trained and skilled volunteers who are certified instructors and range safety personnel.

Men’s Night Out

New Middletown

New Middletown Farmers and Sportsman’s Club, 3341 E. Calla Road, is having a Men’s Night Out ox roast July 7.

The gate opens at 3 p.m., and dinner is served at 6. Cost is $22 per man payable at the gate.

Ladies firearm class

Vienna

The Fish & Game Club of Vienna, 1508 Youngstown Kingsville Road, is having a ladies firearm class from 5:45 to 10 p.m. starting July 17.

The class will run for eight weeks and qualifies participants for a concealed-carry permit.

CCW class

New Middletown

The New Middletown Farmers & Sportsman’s Club, 3341 E. Calla Road, will have a one-day CCW class at 8 a.m. Sept. 29.

Cost is $90 and includes books, targets, coffee, muffin, hot dog, water and coffee. A $20 nonrefundable deposit is required to hold a spot in the class.

Capturing grass carp

COLUMBUS

Fisheries biologists from multiple agencies recently conducted a project on the Sandusky and Maumee rivers to assess their ability to capture grass carp, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Crews from the ODNR Division of Wildlife worked with Michigan DNR; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada; Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry; Minnesota DNR; Great Lakes Fishery Commission; The Nature Conservancy; U.S. Geological Survey; Quebec Ministry of Forest, Wildlife, and Parks; New York State Department of Environmental Conservation; Michigan State University; The Ohio State University; and the University of Toledo for three days of sampling looking for grass carp.
