Mercy Health Foundation receives 2018 leadership award
The Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board recognized Mercy Health Youngstown and Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley with the 2018 Leadership Award during its recent annual recognition luncheon. Currently, Mercy Health Youngstown, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and the Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board are working with Neil Kennedy Recovery Centers to provide greater access to detoxification services, added Duane Piccirilli, executive director, Mahoning County Mental Health & Recovery Board. This project, he said, will add 14 beds at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital that will provide for on-demand access to detoxification services. All of these services – safe rooms, mental health navigation, peer recovery supports and detoxification are critical to our community and are only possible because of Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley, Piccirilli said.
Society offers walking tours
The Poland Historical Society will be offering guided walking tours of historic South Main Street during the week of Celebrate Poland. Tours will be available on June 27 from 7-8:15 p.m. (participants should meet at Town Hall) and on June 30 from 1-2:15 p.m. (participants should meet at the Historical Society tent near Town Hall).
Snyder elected to Chief Justice position
Jacob Snyder, student at Poland Seminary High School, was recently elected by his peers to the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court for Buckeye Boys State. American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an intensive seven day program focused on the workings of city, county and state government, civic engagement and leadership development annually conducted by the American Legion Department of Ohio at Miami University. Snyder is the captain of the PSHS golf team and finished second team all Northeast in golf. He is the treasurer for the student council and is very involved at his church, Poland Presbytaerian Church. He plans to attend Yale for college. He was sponsored to attend the American Legion Buckeye Boys State Program by American Legion Post #737.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on July 11 and 25 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.
Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library on July 12 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Blood drive

Nominations sought for Italian Fest
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends at the Poland library on July 30 at 2 p.m. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.
Bonding with babies and books and signs
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, with a rock and roll theme that’s followed by time to play and socialize on July 18 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones. This event is for babies.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play. Read a story and have fun on July 17 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for children who are ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, at the Poland library on July 24 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.
Sign language camp
All students entering fourth through eighth-grades who want to learn a new language and want to be able to communicate with people who are deaf should join in this camp on July 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Poland library. Join in for two mornings of fun, games, activities and crafts while learning sign language and about Deaf culture. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Registration is required.
Escape from Hogwarts
Someone has used a Time-Turner to steal one of Voldemort’s horcruxes to prevent him from being destroyed. Can you and your fellow Hogwarts students find the horcrux and escape before time is up? This event is for adults and teens in grades 7-12 and will take place on July 19 at 2 p.m. at the Poland library. Call the library to register.

Join the Poland library on July 17 from 7-8 p.m. for a relaxing evening of coloring for teens and adults. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices at this event on July 28 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Local church hosts strawberry festival
The Poland Presbyterian Church Strawberry Festival will take place on June 29 from 5-8:30 p.m. on the church lawn, located at 2 Poland Manor, rain or shine. Watch the parade, enjoy strawberries, ice cream, shortcake, hots dogs, sausage sandwiches, snacks and beverages during the event. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and summer basket raffle. All proceeds will go toward benefitring the PPC Parish Life Committee and PPC youth programs.
Felger Exotics
Come “monkey” around with Felger Exotics live animals on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library. There will not only be monkeys, but a bunny or two. Come to the library and see a baby kangaroo. This is your chance to let the library know your favorites. Vote for your favorite TV show, movie, song, book and more throughout regular hours in June at the Poland library. Each ballot will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a gift card. The results will be posted in July. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
Trim a tree for August
Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree throughout June, July and August. This event is for children of all ages.
Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
