Shrine Club to host golf classic

The Youngstown Shrine Club will host its annual Arnold Collins Memorial Golf Classic on June 25 at Salem Hills Golf Course, state Route 45. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Dinner will take place at 6 with prizes and awards to follow. Cost is $75 per player and includes cart, both meals and refreshments. Pink Ribbon Class set

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. MVARA to participate in annual Field Day

In cooperation with Mill Creek MetroParks, radio operators from the Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will participate in the annual Field Day. The event will take place from noon Saturday until 2 p.m. next Sunday and demonstrate to the public how amateur radio – or ham radio – responds to public communications needs in times of emergencies.

Ham operators will set up multiple stations at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, state Route 46, across from the Canfield Fairgrounds and operate for a full 24 hours on power supplied from stand-alone generators, batteries and solar power.

The yearly event in the United States and Canada is coordinated by the American Radio Relay League. Stations, complete with sophisticated computer systems, antennas and power distribution, are assembled quickly to make contact with thousands of other stations nationwide, completely independent of domestic power and support. These stations will be using many forms of communications from voice and Morse Code to the latest digital transmission systems and satellite communications. The ARRL estimates that more than 35,000 hams participate every year.

Salem Library to host book discussion

The Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host a book discussion group at 7 p.m. June 26 on “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis” by J.D. Vance. The book challenges beliefs and emotions about the culture of families raised in Appalachia. Copies of the book may be borrowed from the library. Registration is not required.
