The Hilltop Elementary School fourth-grade class presented An Evening of Art and Music in tribute to the Great State of Ohio on May 10. The evening featured displays of artwork from each student, under the guidance of Hilltop Art Specialist Diane Leonard, and musical selections under the direction of Hilltop Elementary School Music Specialist Stephanie Summers.
“Welcome to our Evening of Art and Music morning show. I’d like to thank our fourth-grade staff for all their hard work in helping the students get ready for their performances. I’d also like to thank Ms. Summers and Mrs. Larson for all their hard work preparing the show and the students. Enjoy our morning performance of our Evening of Art and Music,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal.
The musical portion of the show was full of selections which honored the state of Ohio, including “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Canoe Song,” “Fifty-Nifty United States,” “Lady of the Harbor,” “Down the River,” “Follow the Drinking Gourd,” “This Land is Your Land,” “Beautiful Ohio” and “Hang on Sloopy,” the state rock song. The students also played the recorder during two selections.
In between the musical selections, several students from each class had speaking roles, which focused on Ohio history, such as facts about famous Ohioans, the Underground Railroad, Native American Indian tribes, Ohio’s natural resources and agricultural importance, the naming of areas of the state and biographical information on the eight presidents from Ohio.
“Weren’t they wonderful? Let’s give them another round of applause. I also wanted to thank Mrs. Leonard, our art specialist for all her hard work in helping the students create their artwork throughout the year for this show. We have very talented students in art, music, and academics here at Hilltop,” Maroni said.
The students’ featured artwork, The Altered Book Project 2017-18, which was completed throughout the year in art class taught by Leonard, was on display in the hallway before and after each performance.
For “The Altered Book Project 2017-18,” the fourth-graders used old and discarded literature books, and upscaled old books into art journals with a common theme of All About Me.
Pages in the art journals offered visual representatives of the fourth-graders’ lives and included, I Have a Heart - I am Passionate, Hand it to Me - I am a Character, I am a Super Hero - My Avatar, Our Futures in Colored Bubbles, When I am Older…, A Reflection of My Personality, The Recipe for My Favorite Color, I Am - Word Collage.
For the show, the students were dressed in matching T-shirts, emblazoned with Hilltop Elementary School - An Evening of Art and Music.
