Coffee with the master gardeners – herbs for pollinator conservation
Learn what types of herbs to plant that can attract pollinators and keep them around your garden at this program on June 18 at 9:30 a.m. with refreshments and continues with an educational program from 10 a.m. until noon. Program speaker Marilyn McKinley, Mahoning County Master Gardener Volunteer, will discuss herb varieties, planting practices and which herbs attract which pollinators. Quilters’ garage sale takes place on June 23
Stop by the Quilters’ Garage Sale and pick up some fabric and crafting supplies. One day only – June 23 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at 3735 Barber Drive in Canfield. From sewing machines to quilting notions and crafting supplies – and lots of fabric – this is an opportunity for quilters and crafters alike. Proceeds from this sale help the guild continue their philanthropic work, donating pillowcases and small quilts to area veterans groups, Akron Children’s Hospital, Hospice of the Valley and others. Barber Drive is off of Fairway Drive, near Tippecanoe Road in Canfield Township. TQGIBT meets at Fair Park in Canfield on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions. Monday Night Writers meeting scheduled for June 18

Canfield Community Band needs 76 trombones
Coming off the success of last summer’s Piccolo Palooza, the Canfield Community Concert Band is inviting trombone players to join in for a performance of “The Music Man’s Seventy Six Trombones.” The concert will be on July 3 at Austintown Township Park, and the concert in the park is part of the Austintown Fireworks Celebration. Canfield High School student to tour Europe
Canfield High School student Rachel Beil received a clarinet spot with the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra (COYO). She is one of four clarinets. COYO is a nationally acclaimed youth orchestra and will be touring Europe in the Summer of 2019.
CHS Class of 1983 to meet for reunion
The Canfield High School Class of 1983 will be hosting their 35-year class reunion Sept. 1 at Kennsington Grill, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include a cash bar, heavy appetizers and music playing 80’s favorites. Tickets are $50 per person. For an additional $12 classmates can purchase the group photo which will be distributed later that evening. Find and sell treasures at trunk sale
Sell your garage sale type items from the trunk of your car in the parking lot or inside the Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St, in Canfield. Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series
Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9. The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60. A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Paint a cake for Father’s Day
Sip or chug a drink from Dairy Queen and paint a DQ cake for Father’s Day. They will provide you with a blank DQ cake, which will serve as your very own “canvas.” Do it all by yourself, or qualified cake decorators will be on hand to show you how to border, or how to use an airbrush. Add sprinkles, colorful whipped cream icing, gel and ribbons. This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your DQ cake. Remember, it is a ice cream cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. They will be happy to keep your cake in the freezer for you so that you can eat and relax. The cost to participate is the cost of the DQ cake and your drink. You do not need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee you the size you may want or the attention from the decorator that you may need if you do not call ahead and have them hold your cake and let them know you are coming. Local flavor comes to a community garden near you
Want to learn more about growing vegetables, soils and plant production? If so, mark your calendars to join OSU Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers at local community gardens this summer. Programs will take place every Monday from May 28 until Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. Topics such as vegetable growing patterns, production details and soil characteristics will be discussed. This program is geared for participants of all ages, and is beneficial to the backyard gardener just wanting to learn some tips and tricks, or for someone wanting to start their own community garden. Each week will be hosted at a different community garden in the Youngstown area. Participants should bring a note pad and a lawn chair for seating, as well as their gardening questions. Cleveland really does rock
Learn all about rock and roll and the Cleveland Connection with author Deanna Adams at the Canfield library on July 19 at 6:30 p.m. Join the fun as you “experience” this musical history by hearing the recordings and watching videos of such diverse local artists as the Glass Harp, the O’Jays, the James Gang, the Raspberries, Eric Carmen, the Michael Stanley Band, Devo, Chrissie Hynde and others. You’ll also have the opportunity to listen to live music by Davis & McKay.
Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: June 21 at 6:30 p.m. - “Be Confident,” July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes joins in with Salem car cruise for event
The call to take over The Salem Super cruise, Salem’s largest annual event attracting thousands, was recently answered by The Mahoning Valley Corvettes. The non-profit car club dates back to 1962 including members from every surrounding community and Salem. Many of the club members have enjoyed the Salem Super Cruise and will now partner with the City of Salem to put on the event entering its 14th year. The Salem Super Cruise is open to all cars and trucks, not just Corvettes. Motorcycles are also welcome. The weekend benefits the Second Harvest Foodbank, which feeds many hungry local families. The event will take place June 7-10 and will feature activities, some free, including a parade, car show, food, live bands and more. The Mahoning Valley Corvettes look forward to partnering with the City of Salem to provide a this weekend for the entire family.

GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
