Nominations sought for Italian Fest
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Recycled record art
The combination of music and art will be explored by using vinyl records as your canvas to make a new piece of art with paint and collage materials at the Boardman library on June 27 at 7 p.m. All materials will be supplied. This event is for tweens and teens.
Game night for adults
Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (Rummy), dice (Farkle) and Scrabble on June 28 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Bring a friend or two and join the group. They meet on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.
Students Leadership Challenge 2018
In celebration of his more than 50 years in martial arts, Master Park is offering a “Students Leadership Challenge 2018.” Park has been training and instructing martial arts to all ages for more than five decades in the United States and Korea. He has witnessed and proved that more than 90 percent of students became more successful academically, physically and mentally when participating in martial arts instruction. This year, 3-8 students will be selected from each school building location of 10 local school districts from across the Mahoning Valley. Schools participating are Boardman, St. Charles, Poland, Holy Family, Canfield, South Range, Austintown, Cardinal Mooney High School, Ursuline High School, St. Christine, Western Reserve, West Branch, Columbiana, Springfield and Lowellville. A scholarship will be available to those who are chosen for 1-3 months of 1-hour classes twice per week. To apply, you must have at least a GPA of 2.5 or higher. You must submit a form and two recommendations from a teacher or parent. Students are required to follow the rules and regulations. No experience is required. Individual and corporate sponsorships are also available at the following levels: listing sponsor - $100; silver - $300; gold - $500 and platinum - $700. Akron Children’s names new chief human resources officer
Rhonda Larimore joined Akron Children’s Hospital on June 1 as chief human resources officer. In this role, Larimore will oversee the development and implementation of human resources policies, programs and services that support the hospital’s mission, vision and service orientation.
Rock out with the Green Team
Rock out with Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team, as they present a Sesame Street book titled “From Trash to Treasure” by Liza Alexander on June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. After reading the story, you will be able create musical instruments from recovered material and join in the band to play the ever popular Recycle Rap! This event is for children of all ages.
Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series
Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9. The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60. A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40. I Read YA book club
This book club is for adult fans of Young Adult Literature. Talk about why you like YA, and read and discuss your latest finds. The next meeting will take place on June 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will be reading ““Turtles All the Way Down” by John Green.
Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Night market to begin in June
The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate. Park to host day camp during summer
Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
