Getting a restful night’s sleep seminar

The Ohio Naturopathic Wellness Center in Boardman will be hosting a free natural health seminar titled, “Getting a Restful Night’s Sleep,” on June 14 at 6:30 p.m. Join Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND to discover the simple, natural things you can do to help you get the restful, restorative sleep you need every night. Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Supper at the Corner

Smith Corners United Methodist Church, located at 3000 S. Canfield Niles Road (on the corner of Kirk Road and State Route 46) in Austintown, will host a Supper at the Corner event on June 21 from 4:30-6 p.m. This supper is a free community outreach of the church and open to all each month. Donations are accepted to continue this program.

Hopewell Theatre has auditions for upcoming show

The Hopewell Theatre announced auditions for “Moon Over Buffalo,” a screwball comedy filled with slapstick, misunderstandings, love, romance, infidelity and mistaken identity. Auditions will take place on June 18 at 6 p.m. at the theater, located at 702 Mahoning Ave. Cast requirements are as follows: male, 50’s, able to do strong physical comedy, pratfalls, etc.; female, 50’s, able to do British accent; female, 70’s, needs strong comedic skills; female, late 20’s, able to do British accent; female (20’s), ing nue; two males, late 20’s, able to do strong physical comedy; male, 50’s, wealthy and used to getting what he wants. Directing is Regina Reynolds assisted by Marlene Menaldi Strollo. Performance dates are Aug. 31, Sept. 1, 7, 8, 9. Rehearsals will begin when casting is completed. Bus trip to Pittsburgh to see “Beautiful - The Carole King Musical”

The Jewish Community Center of Youngstown is hosting a bus trip on June 17 to Cleveland to see “Beautiful -The Carole King Musical.” Leave the JCC at 11 a.m. to make the 1 p.m. showtime and return at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $65 for members and $85 for non members. Vacation Bible school offered in July

Paladin Brewing summer kick-off party and Kelli’s Cookin grand opening

Join Kelli and the crew at Paladin Brewing will celebrate the grand opening of Kelli’s Cookin’, a brand new food truck to the Youngstown area featuring burgers, fries and grilled cheese, but with Kelli’s twist, plus a variety of rotating specials. The grand opening is on June 16 from 2-9 p.m. at Paladin Brewing, located at 6520 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, during Paladin’s Summer Kick-Off Party. Stick around Paladin to see Hair Supply, whose show begins at 7 p.m. As part of Paladin’s Summer Kick-Off Party, Dragonhold Larp and Society for Creative Anachronism will be on hand with live sword fighting demonstrations and a display of medieval arts and crafts presented by costumed members. Paladin will open early for the occasion, and they will also have a bounce house set up.

Explore water all around us

Enjoy stories and STEM-related activities as you explore the science of water on June 27 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. Make your own rain stick. This event is for school-age children.

Gotta Move 2.0

The Austintown library will project child-friendly workout videos onto the big screen and attempt to follow along on June 29 at 3:30 p.m. Wear comfy clothes and prepare to work up a sweat during this 30-minute program. This event is recommended for ages 6 and up.

Save the bees

Bees are a critical part of the ecosystem. Join the Austintown library on June 23 at 10 a.m. for crafts, games and light refreshments that encourage your child’s exploration in the world of bees. See a frame of honey up close. A drawing will take place, and the winner will receive a book about bees. This event is for children of all ages.

Tic-Tac-Toe rocks

Make your own take along Tic-Tac-Toe game on June 20 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. This event is for teens and tweens.

Living with Alzheimer’s for caregivers by the Alzheimer’s Association

When someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, friends and family have many questions. What does the diagnosis mean? What kinds of plans need to be made? What resources are available to help? As the disease progresses, new questions reflect growing needs for skills, programs and services. Join the Austintown library on June 21 at 6:30 p.m. for this series of programs that provide answers to the questions that arise in the early, middle and late stages of the disease. Family movie night

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on June 26 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family and children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Basic Computer Class

Learn very basic computer skills at this program on June 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. This is a beginner’s class that will cover use of a mouse, computer terms and simple internet use. Chapter Chat book club

Attend the Chapter Chat book club on June 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library where they will be discussing “Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. The group reads and discusses a book together every month and each month will be a new genre. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults.

Holiday closings

All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed for Independence Day on July 4.

Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Rock out with the Green Team

Rock out with Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team, as they present a Sesame Street book titled “From Trash to Treasure” by Liza Alexander on June 25 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. After reading the story, you will be able create musical instruments from recovered material and join in the band to play the ever popular Recycle Rap! This event is for children of all ages.

Redeemer Lutheran Church VBS has “On the Farm” theme

Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Vacation Bible School for children who are ages 3-12 on July 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. The theme will be “On the Farm.” The program will take place at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm Classroom on the first two days. The final day will take place at Redeemer Lutheran church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. There will be a picnic on the last day. There will be crafts, games, gifts, music and fun. The event is free and open to all children in the community between the ages of 3 and 12. Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. The boys’ basketball camp will run from June 19-21 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. for grades 4-9. The cost to participate is $60. The CMHS Football Camp of Champions will take place from June 25-26 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for grades 3-8. The cost to participate is $60. A cheer camp will be offered Aug. 1-3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. with a cheer exhibition on Aug. 3 at noon for those in grades 5-8. The cost is $50. A mini cheer camp will take place on Aug. 1-8 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. The cost to participate is $40. Paint a cake for Father’s Day

Sip or chug a drink from Dairy Queen and paint a DQ cake for Father’s Day. They will provide you with a blank DQ cake, which will serve as your very own “canvas.” Do it all by yourself, or qualified cake decorators will be on hand to show you how to border, or how to use an airbrush. Add sprinkles, colorful whipped cream icing, gel and ribbons. This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your DQ cake. Remember, it is a ice cream cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. They will be happy to keep your cake in the freezer for you so that you can eat and relax. The cost to participate is the cost of the DQ cake and your drink. You do not need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee you the size you may want or the attention from the decorator that you may need if you do not call ahead and have them hold your cake and let them know you are coming. A dozen makes a difference

The Austintown library wants its materials being used by the community. Help them empty their shelves by borrowing books, movies and other items at the Austintown library this summer. Each time you check out a dozen or more items, you will help them create a masterpiece by adding a square to our “Starry Night” mosaic poster. This event is for all ages.

Missing velociraptor eggs

In anticipation of the new Jurassic World movie, someone has stolen the Austintown library’s velociraptor eggs from their nest. Scour the library during regular hours throughout June to find out which Jurassic Park characters have taken them. One selected winner will receive a Jurassic Park T-shirt. This event is for all ages.

Swedish weaving

Join volunteers from the Embroiderer’s Guild of Youngstown and learn to create a Swedish weaving sampler on June 18 at 3 p.m. at the Austintown library. Do you have coupons you don’t need or need coupons you don’t have? Drop in during library hours during June, July and August at the Austintown library to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons. This event is for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, offered every Tuesday at 10 a.m. in June at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in June at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program

The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Concert series begins June 5

The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019

The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
