Area Girl Scouts earn highest award

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio will honor 43 Gold Award recipients at its celebration at 2 p.m. Saturday at the John S. Knight Center, 77 E. Mill St. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout senior or ambassador may earn. The Gold Award project challenges girls to identify an unmet need or core issue in the community, research and investigate it, recruit volunteers and build a team to create a plan to address the issue. This year’s projects included renovations to domestic-violence shelters, diversity and identity training, farm-education programs and more.

Nationwide, only five percent of eligible Girl Scouts go for the gold. Some universities and colleges offer scholarships unique to Gold Award recipients, and girls who enlist in the U.S. armed forces automatically enter the military one rank higher.

Girl Scout Gold Award recipients in the region include Cassie Forsha, Burghill, Accelerated Reader Library Updates; Melody Harris-Michetti, Fowler, Acute Auxiliary; Gianna Allesse Jones, Warren, Heroines of History Fighting Blight in our Community; Jacquelyn Keslar, Hubbard, Y-Town Work Week; Emalea Moore, Newton Falls, Bennington Flag; Lily Simon, Ashtabula, Volunteer Resource Fair and Memorial Day Parade; Ariel Takat, Warren, Assisted Living Facility Canvas Painting and Art Class; and Adelaide White, Warren, Kinsman Quilts.
