Vocal director of high school sets date for trip

SALEM

Attila Samu, vocal director of Salem High School, is announcing a one day summer bus trip to New York City on July 14. The bus will depart from the high school parking lot at 11 p.m. July 13, arriving at the site of the “Today Show” at 7 a.m. July 14. The day is for all to explore on your own. The bus will depart for home at 9 p.m. July 14. Seats are assigned to keep family and friends together.

Simply Slavic committee seeks applicants

The Simply Slavic committee is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship. Undergraduate Youngstown State University students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants will be required to submit a 500-word essay on how being Slavic affects their lives. Applicants need to be able to substantiate they are of at least 25 percent Slavic heritage. Funds can be used for scholarships as well as applied to study abroad programs.

The deadline for applicants is Friday. Winners will be announced at the organizational committee’s appreciation dinner in August. Applications are available at simplyslavic.org.

Cleveland bus trip set for Sunday

The Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane, will host a bus trip to Cleveland to see “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” at 1 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $65 for center members, $85 for nonmembers and includes an orchestra seat and transportation.

Historical society to host lunch program

Mahoning Valley Historical Society will host a “Bites and Bits of History” lunch program at noon June 21 at the Tyler History Center, 325 W. Federal St. Dale Perelman, local author, will discuss “Road to Rust, the Disintegration of the Steel Industry in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio.”

Bring your own lunch or visit the Overture for its $6 lunch special. Call 330-744-9900 to place an order. Coffee, pop and water are available for purchase at the History Center. Parking is available for $2.50.
