Sheriff’s car strikes, kills man, 88, who ran stop sign

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — An 88-year-old man who authorities say ran a stop sign was struck and killed by a car driven by a West Virginia sheriff.

West Virginia State Trooper S.D. Brody tells The Herald-Dispatch that Mike Carter Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene in Cabell County on Sunday morning. His pickup truck was struck by an SUV driven by Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle.

Brody says Carter wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his pickup truck as it rolled over. Zerkle was hospitalized with minor injuries and has since been released.

Brody says accidents are not unusual on that stretch of roadway, emphasizing “everything on Route 2 is dangerous.”
