German town to hold lottery for graveyard plots

Quiet neighbors, pristine grounds and a view to die for: No wonder graveyard plots in Berchtesgaden are in high demand.

The German news agency dpa reported earlier this month that the picturesque town in the Bavarian Alps is taking the unusual step of holding a lottery for vacant spaces in its cemetery.

For years, authorities had to turn down applicants hoping to secure a final resting place in the 17th-century graveyard due to lack of space.

With 200 new plots being created from unused spaces, the town has decided to stage a lottery to ensure that everyone has an equal chance of getting a place in the cemetery.

About 280 people have applied.

Pranksters plant Wyo. city’s flower pots with real pot

POWELL, Wyo.

A Wyoming city has discovered its potted plants have literally gone to pot.

Officials in Powell believe pranksters planted marijuana seeds in city-owned flower pots this spring, leading unsuspecting city workers to water and care for them.

The Powell Tribune reports city Parks and Recreation staff noticed the unauthorized greenery late last month while watering the pots, including one not far from the police station.

Parks Superintendent Del Barton says workers pulled two plants on June 29 and took them to police. Another was found a couple days later. Barton says workers suspect there may be others.

Police Chief Roy Eckerdt believes the clandestine cultivating is “somebody’s sense of humor.” After learning about the “weeds” in the city pots, he quickly checked the planters in front of the police station.

Brewery created quirky beer for Trump-Putin summit

HELSINKI

A small Finnish craft brewery paid a humorous tribute to the Helsinki summit.

RPS Brewing has issued a limited-edition lager depicting cartoon U.S. and Russian presidents on its label, with text for Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin saying “Let’s Settle This Like Adults” and “Making Lager Great Again.”

The beer has been in high demand since it hit the shelves nationwide earlier this month, and the whole 10,000-bottle lot had been sold out ahead of the July 16 summit.

Samples have also been delivered to the U.S. and Russian embassies in Helsinki.
