Mill Creek ABWA to meet on Aug. 14
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 14 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield. Networking will begin at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, salad, Jell-O and dessert. The cost is $15 and reservations may be made by calling Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 by July 31. The speaker for the August meeting will be Sean Posey author of “Lost Youngstown,” as well as “The Historic Theaters of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.” Mill Creek Chapter’s scholarship students will also be in attendance. Trash and treasure sale
The Saxon Club Ballroom, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will be the location of a Trash and Treasure sale hosted by the Saxon Ladies Society of Youngstown on Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Lunch will be served after 11 a.m. and is eat-in or take-out. The menu includes Sauerkraut, hot dogs, German sausages, chips, soft drinks, coffee, and chicken dumpling soup will be available for purchase. Any items donated are appreciated. Austintown National Night Out to be Aug. 7
Austintown will be hosting its sixth annual National Night Out on Aug. 7 at Austintown Township Park from 5-7:30 p.m. All night there will be face painting, crafts with Peg from the Mahoning County Green Team, displays and info on the 20/9 Ham Radio group, free woodworking kits from Home Depot and games for children. There will also be a bounce house and a DJ. At 7 p.m., The Vegas Band will play. Between 5:30-7 p.m., there will be a visit by a few popular superheroes. Visitors can get in and explore the police, fire and ambulance vehicles. The Austintown Fire Department will have a special display of their trucks and Wildfire Jeep. There will be a special check presentation to the AFD by Representatives from Dietz & Watson, a Corporate Sponsor of National Night Out. A portion of the sales of all Dietz & Watson products in area Giant Eagles during the month of July will be donated to local first responders. Hopewell to present “A Wrinkle in Time”
The Hopewell Theatre, located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, recently announced their summer family show, “A Wrinkle in Time,” based on the Newberry Award winning novel by Madeline L’Engle and adapted to the stage by Morgan Gould. Nearly 30 actors and actresses, from ages 5-0, some neophytes and many theater veterans, take to the stage in the telling of this mystical, spiritual, family friendly production. Girls softball league starts registration for fall
The Austintown Girls Softball League recently announced that fall registration is open. There will be an in-person date to register on Aug. 11 from 2 p.m. at the Jessica Moorhead Pavillion. Online registration is also open at http://agslohio.com/teams/default.asp?u=AGSL&s=softball&p=registration and will end after the in-person date. This is the easiest way to register. The cost to participate is $50 per player and this includes a player’s shirt.
Get ready for kindergarten
Celebrate the start of kindergarten by joining the Austintown library at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 2 and 11 a.m. on Aug. 8 for an adventure as they read books, sing songs and say rhymes. Activities will be geared to children entering kindergarten and their parents/caregivers.
Pre-kindergarten story time
This program, which will take place on Aug. 1 at 11:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children who are ages 4- and 5-years-old to help them develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. Use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Memorial run to take place on July 28
On Saturday July 28, the sixth annual Mike Hull Memorial Ride for Autism will host a whole afternoon of fun and activities for the entire family. Mike Hull was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather of a granddaughter on the autism spectrum that he cherished. He was also a musician who loved playing and donated his time and talent to organizations in need. Hull’s generosity did not stop when his earthly life ended in 2012, but continued by becoming an organ donor where his generous gift helped hundreds. The annual poker run is way for Hull to continue to help those in need. The event begins at 11 a.m. with registration at the Dash Inn, located at 2716 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, followed by a blessing of the bikes at 11:45 a.m. The run will begin at noon. From The Dash Inn riders proceed the Grandview (Lake Milton), Power House Cafe (Salem), STYX (Austintown), Brick House (Youngstown) and ends at West Side Bowl (the former Strikers/Mahoning Valley Lanes). There will also be a bowling and pizza party. This event is free for all children and adults with special needs from 12-10 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Crazy. Organizers thank Nate and Jamie Offerdahl, owners of West Side Bowl, for the generous gift. The cost to participate in the run is $10 per rider and it includes a food ticket, music and fun. Non-riders can still enjoy a Chinese raffle and 50/50. Proceeds support the programming of the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley helping families and individuals with autism in the tricounty area. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library.
Strategy board games at the library
Go to the Austintown library on Aug. 4 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Join the Austintown library on Aug. 1 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Lego my library
Meet at the Austintown library on Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. and Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Horror movie marathon for teens
Take your mind off the horror of a new school year by spending the day at the Austintown library’s Horror Movie Marathon on Aug. 3 at 9 a.m. The movies will be rated PG-13, so make sure it’s okay with your parents that you watch them. They will start the first movie as soon as the doors open, and keep the reels going until 5 p.m. Stay for as little or as long as you want... if you dare. This event is for teens entering grades 7-12 only. No exceptions. Some snacks will be provided, but feel free to bring your own.
Blood drive
There will be a blood drive on Aug. 18 from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Austintown library by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Read It Before You See It book club
People always say the book is better than the movie. This book club will get together to read and discuss books that are soon to be released in the theaters. Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans
During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season
The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program
The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Concert series begins June 5
The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). The schedule is as follows: July 31 - Blue Siren, Aug. 7 - The Vegas Band, Aug. 14 - Jim Frank Combo (Continuing Healthcare Solutions Senior Art Exhibit) and Aug. 21 - Leanne Binder.
Saxon Club hosts annual flea market
The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019
The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
