ODOT: Communities must take down speed trap signage

LIBERTY — The Ohio Department of Transportation ordered Liberty, Weathersfield, Hubbard Townships and the cities of Youngstown and Girard to take down their speed enforcement signage or any related signage on the highways by Aug. 3.

“ODOT has observed that your agency has installed such photo speed enforcement equipment or signage in ODOT right of way and has done so without an ODOT permit,” read the letter sent to to communities.

The letter stated the signs violate Ohio Revised Code 5515, which says there can’t be signs placed or maintained on highways without consent and without a legal permit from the director of ODOT.

The order affects Interstate 80, I-76, state Route 82 and SR 11.

Matt Bruning, ODOT press secretary, said it’s up to the township’s law directors to determine if this means the townships couldn’t use speed cameras.
