1946: The militant Zionist group Irgun blows up a wing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing 91 people.

1993: JosephRottenborn, assistant superintendent of Canfield schools, who has been in charge of curriculum and personnel for seven years, resigns to take a similar job with Chagrin Falls schools.

An 11-year-old Howland boy who packed a knapsack and intended to ride his bicycle to Texas where his mother lives, got as far as a BP service station in Austintown. While he was getting directions to Texas from one clerk, another called police, which led to the boy being returned to his grandparents.

Rabbi Samuel Meyer, 72, spiritual leader of Temple El Emeth congregation in Youngstown since 1971 and active in interdenominational affairs, dies of a heart ailment.

1978: Gov. James Rhodes and state Sen. Harry Meshel are expected at the groundbreaking ceremonies on Aug. 9 for Youngstown State University’s sports complex, which will be known as Arnold D. Stambaugh Stadium.
