Date set for Blue Devils Father/Son Golf Outing

The Mahoning Country Club will host the Blue Devils Father/Son Golf Outing on July 29. The event is a two-person scramble.

Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. with play beginning at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $30 per person and $60 per team. Teams should include a son or daughter with another family member. Price includes 18 holes and a cart.

A hotdog and drink will be provided at the turn. Skill holes, mulligans and string will be available. Raffle baskets will also be available.

A small portion of the profits will go toward the McDonald High School golf team.

Bedford Trails to host cancer benfit outing

Bedford Trails Golf Course will host Beating Cancer with a Club for Anthony Gidaro at Bedford Trails Golf Course on Sept. 30.

All proceeds will benefit Gidaro who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is unable to work.

The event is a four-person scramble with an 8 a.m. shot gun start. Cost are $60 per person (includes: breakfast, lunch, 18 holes and cart, dinner and beverages) and $20 per person (inlcudes dinner and beverages).

The outing features a $1,000 hole-in-one prize and basket raffle. Reservations and fees due by Sept. 24.

Vettel takes pole in home grand prix

HOCKENHEIM, GERMANY

Sebastian Vettel secured pole position for the German Grand Prix on Saturday while Lewis Hamilton’s hopes took another blow.

Already trailing Vettel by eight points in the title race, Hamilton starts Sunday’s race from 14th place after a hydraulic failure.

A huge roar went up from German fans at the Hockenheimring as their local favorite — Vettel grew up near to the track — moved top of the leaderboard with seconds left in qualifying.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas had only just beaten Vettel’s leading time, when Vettel produced a stunning lap to move back in front by about 0.2 seconds.

Vettel has only won the German GP once — five years ago when it was held at the Nuerburgring — but never at Hockeneim.

His 55th career pole position felt even sweeter.

Ferrari’s good day was completed with Kimi Raikkonen third fastest, ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Mets trade closer to Athletics

NEW YORK

Jeurys Familia has been traded by the New York Mets to the Oakland Athletics for two minor leaguers and international bonus money.

The deal was announced Saturday before the Mets’ Subway Series game at the Yankees.

The Mets get right-hander Bobby Wahl, infielder Will Toffey and $1 million in international slot money.

Familia had been held out of the opener, when Robert Gsellman pitched two innings for the save in the Mets’ 7-5 win.

An All-Star in 2016, Familia is 4-4 with a 2.88 ERA and 17 saves in 21 chances. The 28-year-old right-hander has struck out 43 and walked 14 in 40 appearances covering 40 2/3 innings. The right-hander can become a free agent after this season.

With the Mets (40-55) languishing near the bottom of the National League standings, Familia and infielder Asdrubal Cabrera were expected to be traded for prospects as the July 31 trade deadline approaches. Both are eligible for free agency.

Familia had an abbreviated 2017 season due to a blood clot that required surgery. He was 2-2 with a 4.38 and six saves in 26 games. He had 123 saves for thr Mets, who signed him at age 17.

To clear a roster spot, the A’s transferred right-hander Daniel Gossett to the 60 day disabled list.
