Society to offer trolley tours

SALEM

The Salem Historical Society will offer its second and third Underground Railroad tours on the Quakertown Trolley at noon Saturday. Dressed as a Salem Quaker, the docent will take passengers back in time to the year 1856. Travelers will return with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem prior to the Civil War.

Since the homes are private and entrance not possible, flashed on a screen inside the trolley will be more than 100 slides to show pictures of the insides of the homes, Underground Railroad hiding places and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them. The slides will help clarify the historical information presented during the program.

The tour will last approximately 75 minutes. Cost is $15 per person and a minimum of 15 people are necessary to conduct the tour.

Cafaro Foundation makes donation

BAZETTA

The Cafaro Foundation recently donated $17,000 to keep Bazetta Township Park open and operating this year. Due to dwindling state funding for parks, and the failure of a .25-mill tax levy, the township was left without enough revenue to maintain the park grounds and its various amenities.

For this reason, the Bazetta Park Board was facing the prospect of having to close the park. The Cafaro Foundation is a charitable entity established by the Cafaro family in memory of William M. Cafaro, the founder of the real-estate development and management company that bears his name.
