Scrappers win back-and-forth game with Batavia

Tyler Freeman drove in the go-ahead run in the Scrappers’ 5-4 win over the Batavia Muckdogs on Friday night.

Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Freeman hit a double to left field to score Jose Fermin and Ronny Dominguez.

Dominguez and Fermin moved into scoring position with a double steal during Freeman’s at-bat.

It was the second time the Scrappers (20-12) had to retake the lead.

The Muckdogs (15-18) took the lead when Jerar Encarnacion hit a two-run home run in the first inning.

Hosea Nelson hit his fourth homer to make it 2-1 in the top of the second. The Scrappers took the lead with sacrifice flies by Mitch Reeves and Freeman in the third.

Batavia’s Christopher Torres tied the game at 3 with an RBI triple in the seventh, scoring Michael Donadio. Encarnacion gave Batavia the lead with a sacrifice fly.

Scrappers reliever Manuel Alvarez (1-0) got the win after perfect innings in the eighth and ninth. He struck out four.

Scrappers starter Luis Oviedo struck out seven in five innings. Oviedo allowed two runs on a walk abd five hits, including Encarnacion’s home run.

The Scrappers and Batavia will play the second game of their three-game series at 7:05 tonight.
