Boardman township’s administration organized the 13th annual Community Day on June 2 for residents of the township.
The event took place in two locations: outside of the administration building and at the Southern Park Stables. The township administration set up the event at the administration building, and Boardman Park hosted the events at the stables.
“It’s a good family event that’s free for the community,” said township administrator Jason Loree. He was happy with the weather for the day and the great turnout from the residents.
At the administration building parking lot, they had free food, organization booths and emergency vehicles on display. They, along with sponsor Aqua Ohio, gave away free hot dogs, chips and drinks to those in attendance. Members of the high school’s National Honor Society passed out the food.
The administration wanted to give a space for the community’s service organizations at the event. This included Mercy Health and the Boardman Lyons Club. They also had booths for the Boardman soccer team and Hitchcock Woods School.
The township police, fire team and SWAT team brought vehicles to the event for children to learn about and tour. The police had children sit in the front seat and learn to use the lights. The fire department let the children climb into the fire truck and learn about the equipment. The SWAT team brought three large vehicles owned by the township. They also brought riot shields and let the children carry and hold those.
Boardman Park has added to the community day for the last five years. They had tractor rides that went to and from the administration building to the stables.
“It gives families time to see the historic stables and get a feel for coming back to life with animals,” said Karen McCallum, recreation director for the park.
The Southern Park Stables are a remote location of the Boardman Park. This event is the only special event the park hosts at this location, but the 4H club uses the stables and the community garden is located there.
The park set up a dog and llama agility show during the event.
They also had a petting zoo inside the stables where families could pet various animals, such as snakes and camels. They had pony rides and a puppet entertainer as well.
