Pediatric audiology services to be available at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman
Audiology services for children and young adults will be offered at Akron Children’s Hospital’s Beeghly Campus starting July 30. The new service in Boardman is in addition to the audiology services that Akron Children’s already provides in the Mahoning Valley in Warren. In both offices, services are provided by Kathryn Freeland, AuD, CCC-A. Akron Children’s audiology team diagnoses and treats hearing loss in infants, children, teens and young adults. Specialists can help identify hearing loss, provide access to hearing aids and coordinate follow-up services for intervention, monitoring and ongoing evaluations. Extensive audiology services now in Boardman include comprehensive hearing evaluation, behavioral audiometry, tympanometry, otoacoustic emission testing, auditory processing evaluations, diagnostic Auditory Brainstem Evoked Response testing and Auditory Steady State Response audiometry. In addition, a complete range of hearing aid types, including digital and bone-anchored hearing aids, are available at the Boardman office. Any child under 18 or with an underlying medical condition must first receive medical clearance from an otolaryngologist before a hearing aid evaluation and fitting. Golf outing to benefit Field of Dreams
Mill Creek Gold Course’s North Course will host Boardman Community Baseball’s 22nd anniversary golf outing. The proceeds will benefit the Field of Dreams complex. The winning team will qualify for the 2018 Coors Lite Greatest Golfer Scramble championship. The cost for the four-person scramble event is $100 per person and includes lunch, golf, prizes, dinner and beverages. Sponsorship opportunities include hole sponsors ($100) and corporate sponsors ($500), and includes four golfers, lunch, dinner and event sponsor recognition. This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.
DeWine announces Teen Ambassadors
Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently announced that more than 300 students representing 52 Ohio counties have been named to his office’s Teen Ambassador Board for the upcoming school year. The mission of the Teen Ambassador Board is to provide Ohio’s future leaders with an inside look at Ohio law and government. The board is open to high school juniors and seniors from public, private, home, charter, and online schools located in Ohio. This year’s Teen Ambassador Board kick-off meeting will be in August. Local teens named are Daniel Turillo (Boardman High School), Nicolina Aiad-Toss (Cardinal Mooney High School), Dominic DeRamo (Canfield High School) and Alexander Stoneman (Ursuline High School).
New MCESC superintendent named
The Governing Board of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) has named Traci Hostetler as the new Superintendent of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Traci Hostetler has more than 20 years of experience in public education, and has served in various roles in public education, most recently as Superintendent of East Palestine City Schools. She also served as the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Massillon City School District and Middle School Principal at the Canfield Local School District. Hostetler has experience in rural, urban and suburban school districts. She earned her Bachelor’s at Kent State University, a Master’s in Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Superintendent’s License from Ashland University. CESC provides services for more than 46,000 students in school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Portage and Geauga Counties. Hostetler’s contract as MCESC Superintendent will begin on Aug. 1. Previously, the MCESC Superintendent also served as the Superintendent at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC). In March, Dr. Ron Iarussi announced his resignation as Superintendent at MCESC and MCCTC. Dr. Iarussi has accepted a job as Superintendent at Marion City Schools.

Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans
During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Organized crime author to speak
Organized crime author Allan R. May will discuss the Mahoning Valley mafia on July 21 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli Meeting Room, located at 3135 Belmont Avenue in Liberty Township, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, a historical society for Boardman and other local areas. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Night market to begin in June
The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. Park to host day camp during summer
Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg).
