Poland Stadium closes for a day

The Poland Seminary High School athletic department will be closing Poland Stadium all day on July 24. The turf will be cleaned and re-conditioned throughout the day. The stadium will reopen on July 25.

DeWine announces Teen Ambassadors

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently announced that more than 300 students representing 52 Ohio counties have been named to his office’s Teen Ambassador Board for the upcoming school year. The mission of the Teen Ambassador Board is to provide Ohio’s future leaders with an inside look at Ohio law and government. The board is open to high school juniors and seniors from public, private, home, charter, and online schools located in Ohio. This year’s Teen Ambassador Board kick-off meeting will be held in August. Local teens named to the board are Daniel Turillo (Boardman High School), Nicolina Aiad-Toss (Cardinal Mooney High School), Dominic DeRamo (Canfield High School) and Alexander Stoneman (Ursuline High School).

New MCESC superintendent named

The Governing Board of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) has named Traci Hostetler as the new Superintendent of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Traci Hostetler has more than 20 years of experience in public education, and has served in various roles in public education, most recently as Superintendent of East Palestine City Schools. She also served as the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Massillon City School District and Middle School Principal at the Canfield Local School District. Hostetler has experience in rural, urban and suburban school districts. Hostetler earned her Bachelor’s at Kent State University, a Master’s in Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Superintendent’s License from Ashland University. CESC provides services for more than 46,000 students in school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Portage and Geauga Counties. Hostetler’s contract as MCESC Superintendent will begin on Aug. 1. Hostetler will serve as MCESC’s Superintendent. Previously, the MCESC Superintendent also served as the Superintendent at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC). In March, Dr. Ron Iarussi announced his resignation as Superintendent at MCESC and MCCTC. Dr. Iarussi has accepted a job as Superintendent at Marion City Schools.

Ice cream bash with games galore

Enjoy ice cream and games at the Poland library’s end of summer reading bash on Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. This event is for children of all ages. Refreshments will be served.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for kindergarten through play on Aug. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Poland library on Aug. 16 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Ice cream bash with games galore

Enjoy ice cream and games at the Poland library’s end of summer reading bash on Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. This event is for children of all ages. Refreshments will be served.

Color your world

Join the Poland library on Aug. 9 from 7-8 p.m. for a relaxing evening of coloring for teens and adults. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.

Blood drive

There will be a blood drive on Aug. 16 from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Poland library by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Read to Roxie

Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, on Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.

SEO with SCORE Youngstown and the public library

Join SCORE Youngstown and the Business and Investment Center on Aug. 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Poland library in an exploration of SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans

During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Local offices participating are Boardman, located at 7148 West Boulevard (330-726-9061); Poland, located at 301 W. Historical society plans fundraising bus trip

The Poland Historical Society is planning a fundraiser bus trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 19. The trip includes a visit at the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the National Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, lunch at the Church Brew Works, tour of the Strip District and Downtown and a two hour cruise on the Explorer riverboat. The cost of the trip is $105 per person includes the bus transportation, admission fees and lunch. The bus will depart from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, promptly at 8:30 a.m. and attendees are asked to arrive at the church by 8:15 a.m. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. and should arrive back in Poland at approximately 6:30 p.m. Questions should be directed to Larry Bartos, 330-757-4223. The deadline to sign-up for the trip is Aug. 11. There will be no refunds after Aug. 11. Make checks payable to the “Poland Historical Society” and mail to The Poland Historical Society, P.O. Also indicate your choice for lunch: chicken breast, chef’s salad, tilapia or pasta primavera. In addition to your selected entree, you will also be served a pierogi, house ciabbata bread and a beverage (coffee, tea, iced tea or soft drink). Forms for the trip will be available at the society’s tent near Poland Village Town Hall during “Celebrate Poland.” You will also be asked to sign an “Emergency Contact Information” form which includes information of a contact person should an emergency arise.

Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Sign language camp

All students entering fourth through eighth-grades who want to learn a new language and want to be able to communicate with people who are deaf should join in this camp on July 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Poland library. Join in for two mornings of fun, games, activities and crafts while learning sign language and about Deaf culture. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Registration is required.

Appy hour

Learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices at this event on July 28 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available.
