The Green Team came to the Austintown library on June 25 to teach children about recycling.
Peggy Flynn, a 16-year member of the Green Team, ran the event.
“Its important to teach children about the right way to recycle because eventually it will be up to them,” Flynn said.
The event started with her reading “From Trash to Treasure,” a Sesame Street book, to the group gathered.
Flynn added real life recycling information to the reading, to be sure children came away with real recycling tips.
She emphasized what the children could do to help the rain forests, a main concern expressed by the children in the group.
“If you only recycle one item make it the aluminum can,” Flynn said, “That’s how we save the South American rain forests.”
After the reading, children learned how to make shaker instruments out of reused material.
Using just bottles, beads, tape and stickers for decorations, the children all created personalized shakers.
They then used the shakers to keep beat as Flynn taught them the recycling version of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.”
Flynn said that Mahoning was one of the only Ohio counties with free curb side recycling pick-up.
“You can go to any center and pick up your free recycling bin,” Flynn explained. “That will get you started.”
