Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children who are ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

March to the beat of your own drum

Come to the Canfield library on Aug. 8 at 2:30 p.m. as they celebrate music and learn to make and decorate your own drum out of recycled materials, supplied by the library. After the activity, as a special treat, participants will enjoy a brief demonstration by some members of the Canfield “Cardinal Pride” marching band drumline. This event is for school-aged children and up.

DeWine announces Teen Ambassador Board members

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine recently announced that more than 300 students representing 52 Ohio counties have been named to his office’s Teen Ambassador Board for the upcoming school year. The mission of the Teen Ambassador Board is to provide Ohio’s future leaders with an inside look at Ohio law and government. The board is open to high school juniors and seniors from public, private, home, charter, and online schools located in Ohio. This year’s Teen Ambassador Board kick-off meeting will be held in August. Local teens named to the board are Daniel Turillo (Boardman High School), Nicolina Aiad-Toss (Cardinal Mooney High School), Dominic DeRamo (Canfield High School) and Alexander Stoneman (Ursuline High School).

Lego my library

Meet at the Canfield library on Aug. 4 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. and Aug. 15 from 6-7 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

New MCESC superintendent named

The Governing Board of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) has named Traci Hostetler as the new Superintendent of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center. Traci Hostetler has more than 20 years of experience in public education, and has served in various roles in public education, most recently as Superintendent of East Palestine City Schools. She also served as the Director of Teaching and Learning for the Massillon City School District and Middle School Principal at the Canfield Local School District. Hostetler has experience in rural, urban and suburban school districts. Hostetler earned her Bachelor’s at Kent State University, a Master’s in Education from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania and a Superintendent’s License from Ashland University. CESC provides services for more than 46,000 students in school districts in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana, Portage and Geauga Counties. Hostetler’s contract as MCESC Superintendent will begin on Aug. 1. Hostetler will serve as MCESC’s Superintendent. Previously, the MCESC Superintendent also served as the Superintendent at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center (MCCTC). In March, Dr. Ron Iarussi announced his resignation as Superintendent at MCESC and MCCTC. Dr. Iarussi has accepted a job as Superintendent at Marion City Schools.

Coloring for grown-ups

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m. and tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze: coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for adults and teens only.

Canfield Friends to meet

There will be a Friends of PLYMC - Canfield committee meeting on Aug. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Canfield library.

Movie night

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. for a movie where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be either PG or PG 13.

Basic Microsoft Word class 2 at Canfield

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. for part 2 of Beginner’s Basic Microsoft Word. They will cover topics such as inserting tables, WordArt and page numbers. Blood drive

Mah-Jongg Mondays

Lego Mindstorms Robots

Discover how to build, program and test Lego Mindstorms Robots on Aug. 10 at 2 p.m. at the Canfield library. Attendees will receive an introduction to the Mindstorms software and get the chance to work through the stages of building and programming a basic Mindstorm robot. This event is for children in grades 4 and up. Registration is required. Space is limited.

Tales to tails

Read to your favorite therapy dogs on Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This activity helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children grades kindergarten and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pawz for People, a Community Partner of Pet Partners, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for school-age children.

If you enjoy the master of suspense, join the Canfield library to discuss his riveting stories, as well as other captivating tales by his peers. Off the Shelves...

Go to this monthly book club for a lively discussion of titles chosen “off the shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room. Upcoming meetings will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 and at 11 a.m. on Aug. 30. They will discuss “Manhattan Beach” by Jennifer Egan. This event is for adults.

Beef quality assurance certification

Originally, Beef Quality Assurance served two purposes: it educated producers on best practices and quality standards, and gave consumers confidence in their purchase. Now, it also serves as a way to access markets. Recently, Wendy’s restaurant and Tyson Foods announced that starting in 2019; they will only accept beef that originates from cattlemen who are current with their BQA Certification. This is what many call the first in a long line of food processors and restaurants that will soon require the BQA Certification.

In an effort to keep your cattle as in demand as possible, OSU Extension has scheduled BQA chute side training for July 21 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Matthews Cattle Company, located at 8783 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield. Participants will have the opportunity to work cattle through the chute, practice proper injection protocols and demonstrate animal handling techniques. Home canning and food safety series

To learn about canning basics and safe canning procedures, join one or all of these Canning and Food Safety classes on July 26 and Aug. 9 from 1-4 p.m. at the Mahoning County Extension office, located at 490 South Broad Street in Canfield. Topics such as jams and jellies, canning tomatoes and drying apples will be covered by the Mahoning County Master Gardeners. Participants can also bring in their pressure canners to be tested for safety and accuracy. Registration for one class is $15 per person, and registration for all three classes is $40 per person. Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Stikbot Makerspace

Bring your imagination to life with Stikbot at the Canfield library on July 25 at 2:30 p.m. Through stop motion photography and creative storytelling, a Stikbot can be whoever you want: a secret agent, a dragon-slaying knight or the next rock star. Children will use the free Stikbot Studio app, action figures and Legos. Using creativity and imagination, they will design their own stop-motion film by taking a number of still photos, and will add backgrounds and sound to make a movie short. Yearning to breathe free: immigration and naturalization records

Whether they came as colonists or as 21st Century New Americans, many American ancestors have left documented “footprints” that serve as your passport back through time to your ancestors’ origins. This crucial part of genealogical research involves careful examination of historical records. Records discussed at the event on July 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library include passenger lists, citizenship and naturalization records, border crossings and passports, crew lists, immigration and emigration books, slave manifests and passport applications. CHS Class of 1983 to meet for reunion

The Canfield High School Class of 1983 will be hosting their 35-year class reunion Sept. 1 at Kennsington Grill, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include a cash bar, heavy appetizers and music playing 80’s favorites. Tickets are $50 per person. For an additional $12 classmates can purchase the group photo which will be distributed later that evening. For reservations, make checks payable to CHS Class of ‘83 and mail to P.O. Box 35 Canfield, Ohio 44406. Checks need to be received by Aug. 15. Rooms will be available at the Canfield Marriott for anyone needing accommodations. Find and sell treasures at trunk sale

Sell your garage sale type items from the trunk of your car in the parking lot or inside the Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St, in Canfield. There will be 50 spaces available in the parking lot for venders to bring a vehicle or tent to sell your own items. Spaces inside church (23 available) are a first come first serve basis. Tables will be provided. The sale will take place on Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost is $10 per unit (table inside or space outside in parking lot). Responsibilities for those who wish to participate in the sell are to set up 1 hour ahead and clean up when sale is over.

Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Local flavor comes to a community garden near you

Want to learn more about growing vegetables, soils and plant production? If so, mark your calendars to join OSU Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers at local community gardens this summer. Programs will take place every Monday from May 28 until Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. Topics such as vegetable growing patterns, production details and soil characteristics will be discussed. This program is geared for participants of all ages, and is beneficial to the backyard gardener just wanting to learn some tips and tricks, or for someone wanting to start their own community garden. Each week will be hosted at a different community garden in the Youngstown area. Participants should bring a note pad and a lawn chair for seating, as well as their gardening questions. Cleveland really does rock

Learn all about rock and roll and the Cleveland Connection with author Deanna Adams at the Canfield library on July 19 at 6:30 p.m. Join the fun as you “experience” this musical history by hearing the recordings and watching videos of such diverse local artists as the Glass Harp, the O’Jays, the James Gang, the Raspberries, Eric Carmen, the Michael Stanley Band, Devo, Chrissie Hynde and others. You’ll also have the opportunity to listen to live music by Davis & McKay.

Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center

The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. GA to meet twice this week

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
