The Mahoning Valley Young Professionals will host a mixer from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kennsington Grille, 4171 Westford Place.

Library to offer prep session for ACT/SAT

SALEM

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will offer students an informational session to help them develop specific strategies for writing the ACT or SAT essay. The session, which will be open to anyone working on standardized testing, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the Quaker Room.

During this session, the instructor will cover time-management and pre-writing strategies, suggestions for essay structure, developing a strong thesis statement, grammar, vocabulary and more. The students will be given the opportunity to review sample essays and have a chance to take the grade's place and see what separates an adequate essay from an excellent essay.

The instructor will provide written feedback as well as an approximated score. Essay feedback will be returned via email within two weeks of the session. Registration is required and may be done online at www.salem.lib.oh.us or by calling the library at 330-332-0042. This program is free.

Historical society will host lunch program

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society's next Bites and Bits of History lunch program will be noon Thursday at the Tyler History Center, 325 West Federal St. Craig Snyder, a former professional boxer, will discuss his book "The Boxers of Youngstown Ohio: Boxing Capital of the World." Learn about the history of boxing and its impact on local culture.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Participants are invited to take a lunch, or visit Overture for the $6 Bites and Bits lunch special. Call Overture at 330-744-9900 to place an order. Coffee, pop and water are available for purchase at the History Center.

West Side Cats to host garage sale

West Side Cats will host a garage sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 2217 Mahoning Ave. The sale is filled with bargain items that must be sold before they move to their new shelter. They have all shots, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped.

Wine Fest planned

COLUMBIANA

The Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau is announcing that the 2018 Columbiana Wine Festival will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Town Center at Firestone Farms, 101 Town Center Ave.

The event will feature live music, juried arts and crafts, food and selections from area wineries, including Barrel Run Crossing Winery and Vineyard, Diletto Winery, L'uva Bella Winery & Bistro, Mastropietro Winery, Myrddin Wine Company and The Vineyards at Pine Lake. Tickets are $25 per person and available online at http://bit.ly/ColumbianaWineFest2018. Tickets are $30 per person at the gate.

Individuals must be 21 years of age or older to participate. Nominations taken for Legacy Award

Shepherd of the Valley, 5525 Silica Road, Austintown, is accepting nominations for the 2018 Valley Legacy Award until Thursday. The award honors individuals who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the community and serves as an inspiration to others.

Eligibility requirements for nominees are: must be a resident of the Mahoning Valley; is limited to one nomination in each of two-consecutive years then must sit out for two years before being nominated again in any category; and the nomination must be received by Thursday.

Antique car show planned for Sunday

The community is invited to an antique car show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Church, 1410 Oak Hill Ave. Patrons are invited to take their favorite vinyl records to be played by DJ Richie D throughout the event. The registration fee for cars is $5. There will be trophies, prizes, a basket auction, a 50-50 raffle, a food truck and popcorn stand. In case of rain, the event will take place July 29. Home Savings donation

Home Savings recently donated a check for $2,000 to Interfaith Home Maintenance Service Inc. The funds will be used to provide emergency or necessary home repairs for low income home owners. The repairs include furnace repairs, hot water tank replacements, plumbing repairs, waterline replacements, the construction of ramps and the installation of grab bars, steps, cabinets, etc.
