Ryan, Johnson keep financial campaign edge

U.S. Reps. Tim Ryan and Bill Johnson, who are seeking re-election in November, have significant financial advantages over their general-election challengers.

Ryan of Howland, D-13th, raised $180,289 in campaign contributions and spent $146,682 between April 19 and June 30, according to his latest Federal Election Commission filing.

Overall for this election, Ryan, who is seeking his ninth two-year term in Congress, has collected $1,315,963 and spent $1,145,528.

Including money he carried over from previous campaigns, Ryan had $415,907 in his campaign fund as of June 30.

Among the political action committees giving $5,000 to Ryan’s campaign between April 19 and June 30 were the American Crystal Sugar Co. PAC of Moorhead, Minn.; United Association Political Education PAC of Annapolis, Md.; American Federation of Teachers AFL-CIO of Washington, D.C.; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees of Washington, D.C.; and Honeywell International PAC of Washington, D.C.

In comparison, Chris DePizzo, a Republican from Cuyahoga Falls challenging Ryan, raised $14,853 and spent $1,270 between April 19 and June 30.

Overall for this campaign, DePizzo has raised $36,196 and has spent $12,686. He had $23,510 in his campaign fund as of June 30.

DePizzo also has $4,767 in unpaid campaign debt.

The five-county 13th District includes most of Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

Meanwhile, Johnson of Marietta, R-6th, raised $313,599 in campaign contributions and $118,010 between April 19 and June 30.

Overall for this election, Johnson raised $1,613,950 and spent $927,558.

Including money carried over from previous campaigns, Johnson had $1,474,233 in his fund as of June 30.

Johnson is seeking his fifth two-year term in Congress.

Majority Committee PAC of Bakersfield, Calif., led by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, gave $10,000 to Johnson’s re-election campaign.

Among the PACs giving $5,000 to Johnson’s campaign include National Cable and Telecommunications Association PAC of Washington, D.C.; National Emergency Medicine PAC of Irving, Texas; Sempra Energy PAC of San Diego; United Association Political Education PAC of Annapolis, Md.; and United Services Automobile Association PAC of San Antonio.

The FEC had not received a campaign-finance report for April 19 to June 30 from Shawna Roberts of Belmont, Johnson’s Democratic challenger, as of Monday. She had $3,529 in her campaign fund as of April 18.

The 18-county 6th District includes all of Columbiana County and eight townships in southern Mahoning County.
