‘Works in Progress’ event seeks artists

“Spiral: Works in Progress,” a performance event, is seeking artists in all disciplines to participate.

Performances by selected artists will be Nov. 9 and 10 at Unitarian Universalist Church, 1105 Elm St. Deadline to apply is Aug. 17. Each artist’s performance will run between three and five minutes.

The event is being organized by Kelly Bancroft, Susan Callen-Miracle and Kayla Clark.

“Spiral: Works in Progress” explores and celebrates the fact that creation of art – like life – rarely follows a straight line. It is filled with stops and starts, motivation and interruption, incentive and discouragement, and moments of belief, despair and indifference.

The organizers are inviting artists of all disciplines to talk about their artistic work in progress and explain why an audience would be important to their project at this point.

Artists can include musicians, visual artists, dancers, comics, actors, poets or other fields.

Original work is encouraged but new takes on already established works of art are also eligible. For example, vocalists may be interested in new interpretations of others’ work, and actors may have new ideas about monologues or scripts already produced or published.

The emphasis on “Spiral” is process: where you’re at in your artistic journey.

To apply, send an email with the following information (include your last name in the subject line) to youngstownspiral@gmail.com: discipline, length of time developing the work, number of individuals involved, tentative title, a brief description and estimated running time of performance. Also, indicate if you are comfortable with an audience feedback session.

Three rehearsals and two performances are mandatory.
