Historical society announces summer schedule
The Poland Historical Society will offer the following schedule of events this summer: on Aug. 12 - open house at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland, from 1-3 p.m; on Aug. 21 - business meeting at the Little Red Schoolhouse at 6:30 p.m.
Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans
During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Local offices participating are Boardman, located at 7148 West Boulevard (330-726-9061); Poland, located at 301 W. The library receives $6,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Summer Discovery Program
The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is supporting literacy with a generous donation of $6,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) for the 2018 Summer Discovery Program, “Libraries Rock!” The Kennedy Family Fund and First Place Community Fund, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, were the grant-makers. The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes which effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org. This year’s Summer Discovery program began in May and runs through July.
Pop-Up library
There will be a pop-up library at Kid Fun and Safety Day at Woodworth Park, located at 255 Warren Ave in Poland, from 6-9 p.m. on July 20.
Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals to benefit from July 14 event
On July 14, The New Brickhouse Tavern, located at 958 E. Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown, is hosting an event to help Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals from 4-11 p.m. There will be live outside music, weather permitting. The cost of $10 will include live music, pasta and meatballs, bread and butter, and dessert. There will also be a Chinese auction.
Historical society plans fundraising bus trip
The Poland Historical Society is planning a fundraiser bus trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 19. The trip includes a visit at the Heinz Memorial Chapel, the National Rooms in the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh, lunch at the Church Brew Works, tour of the Strip District and Downtown and a two hour cruise on the Explorer riverboat. The cost of the trip is $105 per person includes the bus transportation, admission fees and lunch. The bus will depart from Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road in Poland, promptly at 8:30 a.m. and attendees are asked to arrive at the church by 8:15 a.m. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. and should arrive back in Poland at approximately 6:30 p.m. Questions should be directed to Larry Bartos, 330-757-4223. The deadline to sign-up for the trip is Aug. 11. There will be no refunds after Aug. 11. Make checks payable to the “Poland Historical Society” and mail to The Poland Historical Society, P.O. Box 5052, Poland, Oh 44514, along with the following information: name, address, phone number, email address and check number. Also indicate your choice for lunch: chicken breast, chef’s salad, tilapia or pasta primavera. In addition to your selected entree, you will also be served a pierogi, house ciabbata bread and a beverage (coffee, tea, iced tea or soft drink). Forms for the trip will be available at the society’s tent near Poland Village Town Hall during “Celebrate Poland.” You will also be asked to sign an “Emergency Contact Information” form which includes information of a contact person should an emergency arise.

Learn how to download free eBooks, audiobooks, movies, TV shows, music, complete issues of magazines and more to your computer and mobile devices at the Poland library on July 31 at 6 p.m. This event is for adults and teens. Nominations sought for Italian Fest
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. Shake, shimmy and make
Make a musical instrument and more on July 23 at 2 p.m. at the Poland library during July. This event is for rock and rollers of all ages.

Learn how to use the library catalog and manage your account online at this program at the Poland library on July 24 at 10 a.m. Find items to borrow and send them to the branch of your choice ... or send to your home. Home delivery is free for seniors. There is a $3 charge for others. This event is for adults.
Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on July 25 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library.
Yoga class
Friends of PLYMC is sponsoring a Yoga class every Wednesday in July from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland library in the meeting room. Pay as you attend. The cost is $10 per session. For more information, call 330-740-6086.
Tales of King Arthur
Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends at the Poland library on July 30 at 2 p.m. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.
Sign language class
Learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, songs and stories, with a rock and roll theme that’s followed by time to play and socialize on July 18 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. Learn easy corresponding signs to learn and share with your little ones. This event is for babies.
Playtime at your library
Prepare for kindergarten through play. Read a story and have fun on July 17 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for children who are ages 2-6. All children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with Therapy Dogs International, at the Poland library on July 24 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 1-4.
Escape from Hogwarts
Someone has used a Time-Turner to steal one of Voldemort’s horcruxes to prevent him from being destroyed. Can you and your fellow Hogwarts students find the horcrux and escape before time is up? This event is for adults and teens in grades 7-12 and will take place on July 19 at 2 p.m. at the Poland library. Call the library to register.
Color your world
Join the Poland library on July 17 from 7-8 p.m. for a relaxing evening of coloring for teens and adults. Coloring sheets and materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own.
Appy hour
Learn all about popular apps for smartphones and mobile devices at this event on July 28 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library. See a variety of apps that will help you connect to your library, find a good place to eat, keep you entertained in a long grocery line, find a great new recipe or find great music to listen to on your walk. Registration is recommended and can be made by calling 330-744-8636 and asking for Poland.
Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Dates include July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Sign language camp
All students entering fourth through eighth-grades who want to learn a new language and want to be able to communicate with people who are deaf should join in this camp on July 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Poland library. Join in for two mornings of fun, games, activities and crafts while learning sign language and about Deaf culture. Snacks and drinks will be provided. Registration is required.
Trim a tree for August
Decorate an ornament for the Poland library’s all-seasons tree throughout July and August. This event is for children of all ages.
Poland class of 1968 to host reunion
The Poland Seminary High School class of 1968 is having a 50-year reunion on Sept. 15 at the Magic Tree, located on South Avenue in Boardman. For more information, call Jay at 330-953-0953.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
