Monday Night Writers meeting July 16
The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be on July 16 from 6-8 p.m. in the small meeting room at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, located at 43 W Main St. in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” “The Gifts of Change” and “Rut-Busting Book for Writers,” the two-hour sessions offer an opportunity for members to get group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ For more information, contact Nancy Christie at nancy@nancychristie.com.
Beef quality assurance certification
Originally, Beef Quality Assurance served two purposes: it educated producers on best practices and quality standards, and gave consumers confidence in their purchase. Now, it also serves as a way to access markets. Recently, Wendy’s restaurant and Tyson Foods announced that starting in 2019; they will only accept beef that originates from cattlemen who are current with their BQA Certification. This is what many call the first in a long line of food processors and restaurants that will soon require the BQA Certification. In an effort to keep your cattle as in demand as possible, OSU Extension has scheduled BQA chute side training for July 21 from 9-10:30 a.m. at Matthews Cattle Company, located at 8783 Columbiana-Canfield Road in Canfield. Participants will have the opportunity to work cattle through the chute, practice proper injection protocols and demonstrate animal handling techniques. The library receives $6,000 grant for Summer Discovery Program
The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is supporting literacy with a generous donation of $6,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) for the 2018 Summer Discovery Program, “Libraries Rock!” The Kennedy Family Fund and First Place Community Fund, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, were the grant-makers. The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes which effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org. This year’s Summer Discovery program began in May and runs through July.
Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals to benefit from July 14 event
On July 14, The New Brickhouse Tavern, located at 958 E. Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown, is hosting an event to help Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals from 4-11 p.m. There will be live outside music, weather permitting. The cost of $10 will include live music, pasta and meatballs, bread and butter, and dessert. There will also be a Chinese auction.
Schrock to speak on Vietnam experiences
Fred Schrock will share his time as a Vietnam combat medic when the World War II Heritage Group meets at AlaCarte Catering in Canfield on July 16. The speech is preceded by a buffet dinner at the cost of $14 per person, and reservations need to be made with David Frank by calling 330 757-0515 by July 13. The dinner will begin at 6:15 p.m. Shrock was raised on his family’s farm and graduated from Jackson Milton High School. He received his draft notice in March of 1965. Sent to the Sam Houston base in Texas, he was trained as a combat medic. He was deployed to Vietnam in early 1966. Schrock was assigned to the 14th Infantry of the 25th Division. As an invaluable medic, he was part of numerous patrols and skirmishes over his year length tour of duty. Returning in early 67, he spent the remainder of his enlistment state side. He was discharged with a rank of E5. The Heritage Group meets monthly and endeavors to preserve the stories of local veterans of their war experiences.
Women’s spirituality series: journaling 3
Join Ursuline Sister of Youngstown Eileen Kernan to explore how the ancient tradition of journaling can help you dialog with your inner wisdom, gain insight into your life and discern how movement in your life will guide your future. There is no prerequisite to attend these classes, which are Aug. 2 and Sept. 6 from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Ursuline Motherhouse, located at 4250 Shields Road in Canfield. Home canning and food safety series
To learn about canning basics and safe canning procedures, join one or all of these Canning and Food Safety classes on July 26 and Aug. 9 from 1-4 p.m. at the Mahoning County Extension office, located at 490 South Broad Street in Canfield. Topics such as jams and jellies, canning tomatoes and drying apples will be covered by the Mahoning County Master Gardeners. Participants can also bring in their pressure canners to be tested for safety and accuracy. Registration for one class is $15 per person, and registration for all three classes is $40 per person. Join the Canfield library on July 17 at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion on Jay Kristoff’s “Nevernight.” The group will read and discuss a different Young Adult book every month. This event is for adults.
Canfield Community Concert Band to host Winds at the Winery
The Canfield Community Concert Band is hosting the third annual Winds at the Winery on July 15 from 12-7 p.m at Mastropietro Winery, located at 14558 Ellsworth Road in Berlin Center. The event will feature six ensembles, including The Ashtabula Brass Band, The Gem City Brass, The Take 5 Brass Quintet, the Cortland Community Band, the Youngstown Area Community Concert Band, the Austintown Fitch Alumni Jazz Band and the Canfield Community Concert Band. There will be a different band every hour. Mastropietro Winery has graciously hosted this event free of charge to the band, and invites attendees to bring their own lawn chairs, Monaco’s Concessions will be in attendance selling food throughout the day. The event will also include chances at a 50/50 raffle, raffle prizes and door prizes. A portion of the raffle proceeds will go to Angels for Animals for their Angel Wing Campaign. Bonding with babies and books
This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library.

Nominations sought for Italian Fest
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. Stikbot Makerspace
Bring your imagination to life with Stikbot at the Canfield library on July 25 at 2:30 p.m. Through stop motion photography and creative storytelling, a Stikbot can be whoever you want: a secret agent, a dragon-slaying knight or the next rock star. Children will use the free Stikbot Studio app, action figures and Legos. Using creativity and imagination, they will design their own stop-motion film by taking a number of still photos, and will add backgrounds and sound to make a movie short. Yearning to breathe free: immigration and naturalization records
Whether they came as colonists or as 21st Century New Americans, many American ancestors have left documented “footprints” that serve as your passport back through time to your ancestors’ origins. This crucial part of genealogical research involves careful examination of historical records. Records discussed at the event on July 31 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library include passenger lists, citizenship and naturalization records, border crossings and passports, crew lists, immigration and emigration books, slave manifests and passport applications. CHS Class of 1983 to meet for reunion
The Canfield High School Class of 1983 will be hosting their 35-year class reunion Sept. 1 at Kennsington Grill, located at 4171 Westford Place in Canfield, beginning at 6 p.m. The evening will include a cash bar, heavy appetizers and music playing 80’s favorites. Tickets are $50 per person. For an additional $12 classmates can purchase the group photo which will be distributed later that evening. Find and sell treasures at trunk sale
Sell your garage sale type items from the trunk of your car in the parking lot or inside the Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad St, in Canfield. There will be 50 spaces available in the parking lot for venders to bring a vehicle or tent to sell your own items. Spaces inside church (23 available) are a first come first serve basis. Tables will be provided. The sale will take place on Aug. 9 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Aug. 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The cost is $10 per unit (table inside or space outside in parking lot). Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include June 18-22 (integrated camp for ages 6-13), July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Local flavor comes to a community garden near you
Want to learn more about growing vegetables, soils and plant production? If so, mark your calendars to join OSU Extension staff and Master Gardener Volunteers at local community gardens this summer. Programs will take place every Monday from May 28 until Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. Topics such as vegetable growing patterns, production details and soil characteristics will be discussed. This program is geared for participants of all ages, and is beneficial to the backyard gardener just wanting to learn some tips and tricks, or for someone wanting to start their own community garden. Each week will be hosted at a different community garden in the Youngstown area. Participants should bring a note pad and a lawn chair for seating, as well as their gardening questions. Guided labyrinth walk season begins at The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center
The Ursuline Health and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, begins its 2018 Guided Labyrinth Walk season with a walk on April 15 at 2 p.m. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of St. Angela Merici’s introduction to her Counsels. St. Angela founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20 minutes to half an hour. All walks are scheduled weather-permitting. The list of walks is: July 19 at 6:30 p.m. - “Risk New Things,” Aug. 16 at 6:30 p.m. - “Stick with It,” Sept. 20 at 6:30 p.m. - “Get on Your Knees” and Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. - “Expect Big Surprises.” The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. GA to meet twice this week
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
