Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans

During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Local offices participating are Boardman, located at 7148 West Boulevard (330-726-9061); Poland, located at 301 W. Organized crime author to speak

Organized crime author Allan R. May will discuss the Mahoning Valley mafia on July 21 at 10 a.m. at Kravitz’s Deli Meeting Room, located at 3135 Belmont Avenue in Liberty Township, for the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society, a historical society for Boardman and other local areas. The program is open to the public. Admission is $6 for non-members and $5 for members. Refreshments will be served and a 50/50 raffle will take place to benefit the society’s education mission. The library receives $6,000 grant from the Community Foundation

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is supporting literacy with a generous donation of $6,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) for the 2018 Summer Discovery Program, “Libraries Rock!” The Kennedy Family Fund and First Place Community Fund, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, were the grant-makers. The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes which effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org. This year’s Summer Discovery program began in May and runs through July.

Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals to benefit from July 14 event

On July 14, The New Brickhouse Tavern, located at 958 E. Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown, is hosting an event to help Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals from 4-11 p.m. There will be live outside music, weather permitting. The cost of $10 will include live music, pasta and meatballs, bread and butter, and dessert. There will also be a Chinese auction.

Summer fun open house

On July 21 at 12-4 p.m., meet the adoptable bunnies of F5RS, a 501c3 rescue and sanctuary during an open house at their location at 11836 South Ave. in the Old School Marketplace. I Read YA book club

This book club is for adult fans of young adult literature. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. The next meeting will take place on July 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. They will discuss “Genuine Fraud” by E. Lockhart. This event is for adults.

Game night for adults

Play the hand you’re dealt of cards (rummy), dice (farkle) and scrabble at the Boardman library on July 26 at 7 p.m. Bring a friend or two and join in on the fourth Thursday of the month for snacks and bragging rights in this one-hour program for adults.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize every Tuesday in July at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library.

Lego my library

Meet at the Boardman library on July 14 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. The nominee would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the festival opening ceremonies on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. in downtown Youngstown. David Anthony’s magic show on July 16 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library promises to be fun for all ages. Come and be amazed by his magic and illusions, juggling and plenty of audience participation.

Tales of King Arthur

Be swept away by tales of gallant knights in shining armor, elegant ladies in medieval castles and the court of Camelot as high school actors perform Arthurian Legends at the Boardman library on July 26 at 2 p.m. This event is for school-age children, tweens and teens.

An evening with Terry Pluto, sportswriter

Join the Boardman library on July 25 from 6:30-8 p.m. as they host celebrated sportswriter Terry Pluto. Pluto promises a fun and informal night as he talks about sports and life. Paint by sticker

You may have heard of paint by numbers, but instead of paint this group will be using stickers. Join the Boardman library on July 18 at 7 p.m. to create some famous music icons. Supplies will be provided. This event is for tweens and teens.

Playtime at your library

Prepare for Kindergarten through play at the Boardman library on July 18 at 10 a.m. The group will read a book and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities you can do to help kids get ready for kindergarten. This event is for children who are ages 2-6.

Crazy quilting

Let volunteers from the Embroiderer’s Guild of Youngstown show you simple quilting stitches on July 20 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman library. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Dates include, July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Apprentice’s Inn

Join the Boardman library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club on Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and join the adventure. This starts the group’s fall campaign so be ready to create a new character. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens.

Night market to begin in June

The Mission Night Market inaugural year festivities will occur at the Huntington Place plaza, located at 1393 Boardman-Canfield Road in Boardman, on the second Friday of every month June through October, from 6-10 p.m. These dates are July 13, Aug. 10, Sept. 14 and Oct. 12. Proceeds to benefit Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley. Vendors spots are available for $50 per 10 by 10 tent space and $100 for food trucks and the several 10 by 20 tent spaces. However, participation is by application process. MNM Committee limits the overall number and type of vendors for each event and vendors must be approved to participate. Park to host day camp during summer

Boardman Park’s Adventure Day Camp will soon begin. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imaginations, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. The curriculum is designed to be age appropriate, educational and fun as the children participate in a daily schedule of arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. Adventure Day Camp will run for 10 weeks, starting on June 11 and running through Aug. 17. The Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later for an additional charge. Registration begins on April 2. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
