Shepherd of the Valley collecting socks to help veterans

During the month of July, Shepherd of the Valley is collecting white, cotton socks for Veterans in need. Shepherd of the Valley is having its first Stars and Stripes Sock Drive to benefit local veterans. The collected socks will be given to the Trumbull County Council of the American Legion to distribute to Veteran men and women in local nursing facilities and Veteran Clinics. White, cotton men’s and women’s socks can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. Local offices participating are Boardman, located at 7148 West Boulevard (330-726-9061); Poland, located at 301 W. Autism Society receives Youngstown Foundation Grant

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Hine Memorial Fund of The Youngstown Foundation to support its fourth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is hosted by the Youngstown Central YMCA and facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions for a week each month this summer. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand from a single week to three and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer scholarships.

The library receives $6,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Summer Discovery Program

The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is supporting literacy with a generous donation of $6,000 to the Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County (PLYMC) for the 2018 Summer Discovery Program, “Libraries Rock!” The Kennedy Family Fund and First Place Community Fund, component funds of the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, were the grant-makers. The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is operated exclusively for charitable, educational and scientific purposes which effectively assist and promote the well-being of residents of Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. Information about the Foundation can be found at www.cfmv.org. This year’s Summer Discovery program began in May and runs through July.

Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals to benefit from July 14 event

On July 14, The New Brickhouse Tavern, located at 958 E. Midlothian Boulevard in Youngstown, is hosting an event to help Legacy Dog Rescue and Angels for Animals from 4-11 p.m. There will be live outside music, weather permitting. The cost of $10 will include live music, pasta and meatballs, bread and butter, and dessert. There will also be a Chinese auction.

Immaculate Heart of Mary hosts vacation Bible school

Immaculate Heart of Mary is hosting a vacation Bible school July 16-19 from 5:30-8 p.m. This year’s theme is “Sweet on Jesus!” This event is open to anyone interested and will feature supper, snacks, crafts and music. Austintown Fitch stadium closure

Greenwood Chevrolet Austintown Falcon Stadium, including the track and field will be closed the week of July 9. All stadium lighting will be replaced with LEDs during the closure. This is to ensure the safety of all staff, students and community members. The stadium, track and field are expected to be open for all school related activities and the public on July 16.

Local restaurant hosts tasting event

The Manor Restaurant will host a Craft Beer and Crepe Tasting on July 14 from 5-7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Sweet and savory crepes will be featured along with local brewers Paladin Brewing, Biker Brewhouse, Birdfish Brewing Company and Numbers Brewing Company. The Hopewell Theatre announces a diverse 2018-19 season

The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Sunshine Golf Outing to take place on July 21

The 13th annual Sunshine Benefit Golf Outing, sponsored by Magilla’s Sports Bar and Grill, will take place on July 21 at Lakeside Golf Course. The outing is a three-person scramble that includes continental breakfast and lunch at the turn, followed by a made-to-order steak dinner reception at Magilla’s Sports Bar where prizes will be awarded for hole events, the winner of the 50/50 drawing and the winners of the Chinese auction will be announced. This year’s recipient is Rachel Sheridan of Boardman, who is currently battling stage 3 intraductal breast cancer. Chapter Chat book club

Bonding with babies and books

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a care-giver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in July at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego my library

Meet at the Austintown library on July 11 at 6 p.m. and July 20 at 3 p.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.

Blood drive

Nominations sought for Italian Fest

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2018 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the year. Michael Roy’s Cirque du Papier: performing paper magic

See an interactive stand-up origami presentation by visual artist Michael Roy Baldridge on July 24 at 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. He brings origami into the new millennium, combining classic Japanese style origami with the latest in high tech folding. He’ll transform single, flat squares of paper into 3D forms of animals, flowers, sea life, birds and decorative objects right before your eyes. One sheet of paper. No cuts. No tears. No glue. With dexterity, quick wit and knowledge of origami history and technique, he will share the technology and art that is origami. The presentation will be followed by a hands-on origami workshop. Space is limited and registration is required. This event is for school-age children age and up, plus teens and adults.

Shake, shimmy and make

Make a musical instrument and more during regular hours at the Austintown library during July. This event is for rock and rollers of all ages.

Strategy board games at the library

Go to the Austintown library on July 14 at 3 p.m. to play games like “Ticket to Ride,” “Settlers of Catan” and “Carcassonne.” Play what’s there or bring your own to share. Light refreshments will be served. This event is for adults and teens.

Understanding and responding to Dementia-related behavior by Alzheimer’s Association

Behavior is a powerful form of communication and is one of the primary ways for people with dementia to communicate their needs and feelings as the ability to use language is lost. However, some behaviors can present real challenges for caregivers to manage. Join the Austintown library on July 18 at 6:30 p.m. to learn to decode behavioral messages, identify common behavior triggers and learn strategies to help intervene with some of the most common behavioral challenges of Alzheimer’s disease. Gotta move 2.0

On July 27 at 3:30 p.m., the Austintown library will project child-friendly workout videos onto the big screen and participants will attempt to follow along. Wear comfy clothes and prepare to work up a sweat during this 30-minute program. This program is recommended for children ages 6 and up.

Music trivia Monday

Compete against other families in an all-ages music trivia game on July 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The multiple choice quiz, accessed by your phone or one of the library’s devices, will test your knowledge of some of the top songs from the past 50 years. Answer quickly and accurately to score the most points. The winning family gets to be first in the post-game refreshments line. Snacks will be provided.

Rockin’ DIY guitar picks

Join the Austintown library on July 18 at 10 a.m. for a music-inspired craft. Use a guitar pick punch to create custom picks and jewelry. This event is for teens and tweens.

A dozen makes a difference

The Austintown library wants their materials being used by the community. Help them empty their shelves during July by borrowing our books, movies and other items. Each time you check out a dozen or more items, you will help them create a masterpiece by adding a square to their “Starry Night” mosaic poster. This event is for all ages.

Pop-up library

There will be a pop-up library at the Austintown Farmers Market, located at 6000 Kirk Road in Austintown, from 5-8 p.m. on July 16 and 30.

Identify the album cover

Match the album’s title and artist with the correct cover art for a chance to win a prize. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 and is offered during regular hours at the Austintown library throughout July.

Stamping with Cindy

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on July 19 at 3 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. Participation is limited to one session per person each month to accommodate demand, and registration is required. Call 330-744-8636. This event is for adults.

Family movie night

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on July 31 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Basic email class

Learn how easy it is to set up your own email account at the Austintown library on July 16 at 10 a.m. This is a beginner’s class that will cover setting up an internet-based e-mail account and how to use it. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. announced for summer

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently announce that it is bringing back and tripling its summer day camp options for children with special needs and their neurotypical friends. Three weeks of two styles of camp will be offered. Dates include July 30 until Aug. 3 (full camp and integrated camp for ages 3-22) and Aug. 13-17 (integrated camp for ages 6-13). Camp Friend is unique because the student-to-counselor ratio is extremely low and unmatched to address the intense needs of children and teens on the autism spectrum. As a result, every year interested applicants had to be turned away for lack of enough space. The addition of integrated camp will allow ASMV to serve more families by offering more camper spots. Integrated camp will provide the opportunity for higher-functioning individuals to attend a traditional day camp with our counselors there to assist as they have ideal chance to strengthen their social skills. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.’s full camp will bring back a model of daily activities structured around social skill building themes to provide evidence based instructional opportunities in a fun setting. This, plus traditional summer camp activities like swimming, sports and crafts supported by an autism-qualified staff, provide a supported environment while ensuring an equitable experience. Camp costs $150 per student per week and numerous scholarships are available. Redeemer Lutheran Church VBS has “On the Farm” theme

Redeemer Lutheran Church will host its annual Vacation Bible School for children who are ages 3-12 on July 18-20 from 9 a.m. until noon. The theme will be “On the Farm.” The program will take place at the Mahoning County Experimental Farm Classroom on the first two days. The final day will take place at Redeemer Lutheran church, located at 2305 S. Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown. There will be a picnic on the last day. There will be crafts, games, gifts, music and fun. The event is free and open to all children in the community between the ages of 3 and 12. Austintown Food Service department announces summer food program

The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road - Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 4 until Aug. 17. Concert series begins June 5

The 2018 Summer Concerts in the Park Series at Austintown Township Park, located at 6000 Kirk Road, will soon begin. All concerts will take place on Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. (weather permitting). Saxon Club hosts annual flea market

The Saxon Club will start its annual flea market event on May 1 with a flea market taking place every Tuesday through October. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m., and takes place in the Saxon Club parking lot, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Austintown. Vendors can set up before 8 a.m. if they would like. Austintown Local School District announces open enrollment for 2018-2019

The Austintown Local School district will again have statewide open enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades Kindergarten through eighth-grade based on grade level availability. Applications are now available on the Austintown School’s website at www.austintownschools.org. In order to be accepted for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any students living in the state of Ohio and entering grades kindergarten through eighth are eligible. One application must be completed for each student. No new students will be accepted in grades 9-12. Only existing open enrollment students and those in special programs will be accepted into the high school. Open enrollment will close on Aug. 3 for the 2018-2019 school year. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic to be in July

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 16. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society.
