FLASH BRIEFING TUESDAY
Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Robert Moon, 60, of West Ravenwood Avenue, to 10 years in prison Monday after his guilty plea on three counts of gross sexual imposition and three counts of rape. Moon was arrested in Cleveland in February 2017 after a Mahoning County grand jury issued a nine-count indictment for the sexual contact with two 11-year-old girls. The head of the union representing Youngstown firefighters is calling for the city to reverse its policy of closing fire stations on a rotating basis due to the city’s budget crunch. “Our goal is to protect the citizens and keep Youngstown safe,” said Tony Ciccone, head of Youngstown Professional Firefighters IAAF Local 312. “Closing a fire station has to the potential to have devastating effects on the community and will put the lives of citizens and firefighters at risk.” Mahoning Valley elected officials on Monday released a letter they sent to General Motors Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra urging GM to reinvest in its Lordstown assembly plant. Signing the letter was state senators Joe Schiavoni and Sean O’Brien and state representatives John Boccieri, Michele Lepore-Hagan, Glenn Holmes and Michael O’Brien of Warren. GM recently eliminated the second shift at the Lordstown plant, laying off about 1,500 Valley workers at the plant and companies in the plant’s supply chain. This Fourth of July will be hot with possible thunderstorms and jam-packed roads as millions of people travel to celebrate the holiday. As for the forecast, the heat wave in the Mahoning Valley will continue through Wednesday with a high temperature near 92 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. There’s a 30-percent chance of precipitation, including possible thunderstorms, primarily between 1 and 7 p.m. The triple A says about 40 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more during the holiday period, which it defines as Tuesday through Sunday. In sports, Canfield's 10 and under and 12 and under softball teams were crowned champs Monday at Boardman's Fields of Dreams.
