Phantoms trade Thomson to C. Rapids

YOUNGSTOWN

With the Eastern Conference standings extremely tight, the Youngstown Phantoms on Tuesday traded their top scorer on the power play to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Matthew Thomson, who leads the USHL with 10 power-play goals, was sent to the RoughRiders in exchange for forward Dalton Messina.

The 5-foot-11 Messina has two goals and two assists in 15 games.

Thomson had 15 points in 33 games. All of his goals were scored with the man-advantage and he was a -14 in plus/minus.

The Phantoms also aquired forward Nick Cardelli in a waiver trade from the RoughRiders.

“Nick Cardelli is a junior hockey veteran and had a previous relationship with a few of our Chicago based players and we felt that adding a veteran scoring line forward with a high compete level and character was important for the second half of the season, “ said Koehler. “Cardelli was well respected and appreciated with his previous teams and should be a creative playmaking scoring line winger with us and add offense to our forward group moving into the second half.”

The Phantoms released forward Joshua Jagger who was claimed by the Muskegon Lumberjacks.

YSU’s Zallow earns Horizon honor

INDIANAPOLIS

Youngstown State runner Chad Zallow earned his second straight Horizon League Men’s Runner of the Week honor.

Zallow won the 60-meter high hurdles at the Armory’s Dr. Sander Invitational last Friday. In the finals, he posted a winning time of 7.66 seconds to take first by 0.05 seconds.

Brookfield team wins tournament

BROOKFIELD

The Brookfield Middle School sixth-grade basketball team recently won the Sharon Tournament as well as the Trumbull League Championship.

In the final, Brookfield defeated Warren JFK, 47-44.

Brookfield’s sixth-grade girls team finished second in the Erin Scullin Tournament in Greenville, Pa.

Chiefs agree to trade Alex Smith to Redskins

WASHINGTON

Two people with direct knowledge of the trade say the Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to deal quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday night on condition of anonymity because the move can’t be completed until the start of the new league year in March. One person tells the AP the Redskins have agreed to a four-year extension with Smith, who had one year left on his contract.

Smith, who turns 34 in May, spent the past five seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to the playoffs four times while throwing for 102 touchdowns and 33 interceptions. He carries a $17 million salary-cap hit for 2018.

The trade spells the end of Kirk Cousins’ tumultuous tenure with the Redskins after back-to-back seasons on the franchise tag.

Illness puts 2 Nebraska players in hospital

LINCOLN, NEB.

Nebraska receiver Tyjon Lindsey and walk-on defensive lineman Dylan Owen were hospitalized after falling ill during winter conditioning drills.

Coach Scott Frost confirmed to The Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald on Tuesday that both players have returned to the team. It was unclear when the players became ill, though Lindsey tweeted a request for prayers for his health on Jan. 23.

Nebraska spokesman Keith Mann said he had no additional information, and Frost did not immediately respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

Lindsey was in the hospital for three days and Owen for two. Frost told the Journal Star both were treated for rhabdomyolysis, a condition that occurs when muscle tissue breaks down and leaks into the blood. The condition can cause kidney damage.
