Man faces weapons charge after gunfire report

YOUNGSTOWN — A Midland Avenue man faces weapons and obstruction charges after police caught him running away from a West Side apartment late Saturday evening while investigating a gunfire call.

Officers were called at about 10:15 p.m. to a Tyrell Avenue apartment for a report of a fight with gunfire. When they arrived, they found Kayan Muhammad, 19, running away. He was caught by police after he fell, reports said.

Reports said police checked out an apartment they were called to the night before for a fight where a man had a gun and two women there said there was no fight, but officers found nine spent shell casings on the patio. The woman gave police permission to search and they found a loaded 9mm pistol and a box of 9mm ammunition, reports said.

Muhammad was taken to the Mahoning County jail and is expected to be arraigned today.
