Early dismissal miscommunication for Y'town schools
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
About 20 Youngstown schoolchildren had to be taken to the bus garage Friday because parents were unaware of an early dismissal.
School was dismissed 90 minutes early Friday, and students were bused home after the dismissal.
School district spokeswoman Denise Dick said the early dismissal is customary at the end of a grading period, and the early dismissal was indicated on the district calendar as well as individual school calendars.
Some parents said they were unaware of the early dismissal due to a lack of robocall or notice sent home.
“For safety reasons and for the welfare of our students, we do not drop elementary students off if there is no one home,” Dick said. “In those cases, those children are transported back to the bus garage. Their parents are contacted, and the children wait to be picked up by a parent/guardian.”
The children were kept at the bus garage on Teamster Drive until their parents picked them up, which was completed about 5 p.m.
