Ugly run dooms Phantoms on the road

MUSKEGON, MICH.

The Youngstown Phantoms gave up four unanswered goals during a 5-3 loss to the Muskegon Lumberjacks on Friday.

The Phantoms have won just two of their last 10 contests. Chase Grescock had the opening goal for Youngstown, but across the first and second periods, Muskegon scored the next four.

Eric Esposito cut the deficit to 4-2 midway through the second and assisted Mike Regush’s goal in the third.

The Lumberjacks’ Anthony Del Gaizo scored on an empty net for a team-high two goals.

Wouter Peeters made 38 saves in defeat.

Zallow, Corbett win at New York meet

New York

Youngstown State’s Chad Zallow won the 60 dash and Jaynee Corbett took first in the shot put to lead a solid effort by the men’s and women’s track and field teams on Friday at the Dr. Sander Invitational at the Armory.

Zallow won the 60 hurdles running a time of 7.66 seconds in a great race against Syracuse’s Angelo Goss. Zallow beat Goss by 0.05 seconds as Goss crossed the finish line with a time of 7.71 seconds.

Corbett won the shot put with a throw of 15.14 meters. She had the same distance as UConn’s Divine Oladipo, but Oladipo’s throw was on her fifth attempt while Corbett’s came on her second try. Corbett was sixth in the weight throw with a toss of 17.29 meters.

Ryan Sullivan placed fifth in the 3,000m running a time of 8:37.37 while Ethan Wilson finished eighth running a 8:38.57.

Carl Zallow was seventh in the 60m dash running a time of 7.03 seconds.

In the 3,000m, McKinsie Klim placed eighth running a time of 10:21.49. Finishing right behind McKinsie was her sister Michelle who was ninth with a 10:28.72.

The Penguins are next in action next Friday and Saturday at the YSU Mid-Major Invitational.

Federer reaches 7th Australian Open final

MELBOURNE, Australia

Roger Federer has moved to within one win of his 20th Grand Slam singles title after securing his spot in the Australian Open decider when Hyeon Chung retired from their semifinal on Friday night.

Defending champion Federer was leading 6-1, 5-2 when Chung retired because of blisters on his left foot. Federer, who spent just over an hour on court, will play No. 6-seeded Marin Cilic in the final on Sunday night.

The 21-year-old Chung needed a medical timeout to re-tape his left foot after going down a break in the second set and only played two more games before he quit.

Federer didn’t let anyone down in a clinical disposal of the No. 58-ranked Chung, who won the Next Gen ATP Finals last November and had an attention-grabbing run through his first five rounds in Melbourne.

The 21-year-old Chung was the first Korean to reach the semifinals at a major and had taken out Djokovic and No. 4-ranked Alexander Zverev on his way to the last four.

Palmer leads Farmers Insurance Open

SAN DIEGO

Ryan Palmer is the 36-hole leader in the Farmers Insurance Open. Jon Rahm is right behind, poised to reach No. 1 in the world. And for the first time in 29 months, a PGA Tour event will feature Tiger Woods on the weekend.

Palmer finished eagle-birdie on the North Course at Torrey Pines for a 5-under 67. He had a one-shot lead over Rahm, the defending champion who birdied two of his last three holes on the North for a 66.

Woods had to rally to make the cut in his return from a fourth back surgery. He was on the wrong side of the green on the par-5 ninth on the North and two-putted from 75 feet for birdie for a 71 to make the cut on the number.
