Police found what appears to be a human skull in the woods near Kensington Avenue and Halleck Street on the city’s North Side on Friday night.

After responding to a call from a man walking in the woods who said he found a human skull about 7 p.m., officers searched the area and found what appeared to be the partial remains of a human skull, said Capt. Brad Blackburn, chief of detectives.

Blackburn added the Mahoning County Coroner’s office will look into it, but discovering further details about the skull may come down to dental or DNA testing.

‘Vicious’ label

Trumbull County’s executive dog warden has classified the three dogs that attacked and injured a woman at a factory in Newton Township on Monday as “vicious,” meaning the dogs will be subject to new requirements if they return home.

The dogs were taken to the county dog pound Thursday after they were recovered from the backyard of a Newton Township home.

Gwen Logan, executive dog warden, said if the dogs’ owner fights the designation, the dogs will most likely have to remain in the pound until a hearing in Newton Falls Municipal Court.

A court official said Friday the only hearing scheduled is at 10 a.m. March 15 for the dog’s owner, David N. Hanson, 60, of Warren Road, Newton Falls, to answer to a misdemeanor charge of failure to restrain dogs.

Warrants net multiple arrests

Police said they found suspected powder cocaine, crack cocaine and 99 painkillers Thursday on a man who was in car driving away from a home police were searching.

Reports said police were serving a search warrant about 6:30 p.m. on North Hartford Avenue on the West Side investigating drug activity when a car pulled out of the drive just as police arrived. Officers with the vice squad and Community Police Unit stopped the car at Brockway and Connecticut avenues and searched it, reports said.

One of the passengers, Isiah Brown, 26, of North Hartford Avenue, had the drugs, reports said. Police arrested him on two counts of possession of cocaine and possession of drugs and took him to the Mahoning County jail. Police found two digital scales inside the house. There were also six children in the house, reports said.

Earlier, officers served a warrant about 5:25 p.m. at a West Ravenwood Avenue home on the South Side, where they found five pills, loose suspected crack cocaine, two needles and a digital scale. Also in the home was an 8-year-old child, reports said.

Arrested on a charge of possession of drugs was Dashawn Hayden, 42, who lists the home as his address. Police issued a citation to Mary Sue Pratt, 29, of Burbank Avenue, for possession of drug-abuse instruments.
