Thursday’s other COLLEGE BASKETBALL GAMES
MEN
Penn State 82, No. 13 Ohio State 79
COLUMBUS
Tony Carr hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give Penn State an upset victory over No. 13 Ohio State, handing the Buckeyes their first Big Ten loss. Carr had 28 points and was 4 for 5 from 3-point range for the Nittany Lions (14-8, 4-5 Big Ten), who were a 11 for 14 from beyond the arc in beating a Top 25 team for the first time this season. Keita Bates-Diop led Ohio State (18-5, 9-1) with 25 points but was in foul trouble for much of the second half. He had three 3-pointers in the last 2:07 to pull the Buckeyes back in it. He tied it with a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left, but Carr was able to connect with the desperation shot from deep as time ran out. Struggling from the 3-point line in recent games, the Buckeyes didn’t hit one until Bates-Diop connected at the 5:31 mark in the first half. They were 1 for 6 from beyond the arc in the half, and 7 for 15 overall.
No. 3 Purdue 92, No. 25 Michigan 88
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.
Vincent Edwards scored 30 points, Isaac Haas added 24 and No. 3 Purdue matched a school record with its 16 straight victory, using a late charge to finally get past No. 25 Michigan. The Boilermakers (20-2, 9-0 Big Ten) have won 20 consecutive games at Mackey Arena and are off to their best start in conference play since the NCAA Tournament began. It’s the fourth time Purdue has won 16 in a row, most recently 30 years ago. Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman had career-high 26 points and Zavier Simpson added 16 to lead Michigan (17-6, 6-4), which was swept by Purdue in the regular season for the first time since 2007-08.
No. 11 Arizona 80, Colorado 71
TUCSON, ARIZ.
Allonzo Trier scored 23 points, Deandre Ayton added 20 and No. 11 Arizona avenged its lone loss of the Pac-12 season by beating Colorado. The 7-foot-1 Ayton, expected to be at or near the top of the NBA draft this year, was 12 of 12 at the foul line as the Buffaloes tried to get physical with the big rookie, without much success. Dusan Ristic added 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Wildcats (17-4, 7-1 Pac-12). George King scored 22 points, including 4 of 5 3-pointers for Colorado (12-9, 4-5). McKinley Wright added 15. Arizona shot 70 percent (16-of-23) in the second half. They were cold Thursday in a first half a first half that ended in a 30-30 deadlock. But Arizona opened the second half with a 15-4 run, ignited by Dylan Smith’s 3-pointer, to go up 45-34 on Ristic’s 16-footer with 15-3 left. The Wildcats stretched it to 53-42 when Ristic made a strong spin move for a layup with 12:41 to play. Colorado coach Tad Boyle drew a technical during the run. Boyle doesn’t like to play zone defense but it worked in Boulder so the Buffs were using it again Tuesday and it worked for most of the first 20 minutes. The Buffaloes scored the game’s first eight points and were up 14-4 early. Arizona, with increasing success in getting the ball to the 7-foot-1 Ayton, slowly caught up and took its only lead of the half 28-26 with 1:18 left. Lazar Nikolic and McKinley Wright each scored to put the Buffs back on top 30-28 before Ristic’s 16-footer at the buzzer tied it at 30-30 at the break.
WOMEN
Iowa 103, No. 12 Ohio State 89
IOWA CITY, IOWA
Iowa’s Megan Gustafson scored 29 points, winning a shootout with Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell, and the Hawkeyes ended a three-game losing streak with a win over the No. 12 Buckeyes, who have now lost three straight. Kathleen Doyle added a career-high 25 points and tied her career best with 11 assists. Makenzie Meyer had 18 points, matching Doyle’s four 3-pointers, and Chase Coley had 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (16-5, 4-4 Big Ten), who dropped out of the rankings this week. Mitchell led the Buckeyes (16-5, 5-3) with 27 points but the NCAA 3-point record-holder and second-leading scorer at 24.8 was just 3 of 11 from deep. Linnae Harper had 17 points and 12 rebounds, Stephanie Mavunga had 15 points and 10 boards and Asia Doss 14 points. Gustafson, fourth in the nation at 24.8 points, had the last nine in a 14-0 run that made it 20-6. Ohio State only got it down to a one-possession game three times after that but Iowa never got the lead to 14 again until the final free throw. The last challenge was late in the third quarter but Gustafson then scored five straight points. Gustafson was kept from a double-double for only the second time this season, getting just five rebounds, more than seven below her average. Iowa was 9 of 17 from distance, shot 54 percent overall (37 of 68) and made 8 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter. The Buckeyes were 5 of 23 from deep and shot 41 percent overall (35 of 86).
