Struthers Mayor releases year-in-review

Struthers Mayor Terry Stocker released a year-in-review analysis of the city.
The review at Wednesday’s council meeting was a collection of the city’s accomplishments throughout 2017. Here are some stand-out elements from the report, which can be obtained in its entirety at city hall.
The city will end the year in the black with a $1.4 million carry-over heading into this year.
In terms of road resurfacing, the city worked on eight road surfaces throughout the year. Since 2015, 26 streets – nearly eight miles of road in total – have been resurfaced.
At city hall, security cameras have been installed in and around the building, and a weather shelter has been built behind the building for employees and residents.
Regarding blight reduction, 13 structures were identified as substandard by the city and subsequently demolished thanks to use of Mahoning County Land Bank Initiative funds.
A new garage was built in Mauthe Park for the storage of the city’s lawn tractors and other park equipment, and new concrete was laid behind the park’s multipurpose building to provide safer walking conditions .
The city police department recently purchased three new police cruisers as well as 12 new portable radios. The department also increased the amount of training police officers receive each year and purchased new equipment, including stun guns.
The city settled contract negotiations with labor organizations representing the fire department, the wastewater treatment plant and the city dispatchers, each for three-year periods.
Concerning the environment and the city’s outdoor offerings, the city received a recycling grant award and also replaced culverts at the Stavich Bike Trail to improve safety for bikers and hikers.
