Fitch Hall of Fame seeks nominees

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Fitch Athletic Hall Of Fame is accepting nominations through March 9 for the 2018 class.

Nominations can be downloaded on-line at www.austintownathletics.com. Nomination forms also may be picked up at the Austintown Schools Transportation Office, 275 Idaho Road.

The Fitch Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be on Sept. 15 at 5 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center. The inductees will be honored at the Warren Harding-Fitch football game on Sept. 14.

Correction

South Range’s Mike Cunningham scored the go-ahead basket in a 53-51 victory over Valley Christian in a high school basketball game on Tuesday night. A story in Wednesday’s edition credited a different player with the shot.

Ex-YSU assistant named KSU OC

MANHATTAN, Kan.

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder promoted Andre Coleman to offensive coordinator on Wednesday, and made Charlie Dickey and Collin Klein co-coordinators in a revamped coaching staff structure.

Coleman played wide receiver for Snyder in the early 1990s and has tutored the Wildcats’ receivers the past five years. He takes over for Dana Dimel, who left to become head coach at UTEP.

Dickey, the Wildcats’ offensive line coach, will coordinate the running game while Klein, a former Heisman Trophy finalist, will handle the passing game along with his role as quarterbacks coach.

Snyder sounded unconcerned in a statement that he has essentially three coordinators, pointing out their long histories with the program and “how well these three have worked together.”

Coleman is a Hermitage, Pa. native and was an assistant at Youngstown State.

Vonn headlines U.S. Alpine ski team

PARK CITY, Utah

Past Olympic gold medalists Lindsey Vonn, Mikaela Shiffrin, Ted Ligety and Andrew Weibrecht are among the 22 ski racers named to the U.S. Alpine team heading to the Pyeongchang Games.

U.S. Ski and Snowboard announced the roster on Wednesday.

A couple of familiar faces and repeat medalists who are not on the team because they have retired from competition are Bode Miller and Julia Mancuso.

The U.S. men’s team includes David Chodounsky, Tommy Ford, Tim Jitloff, Nolan Kasper and Steven Nyman. The women’s roster includes Stacey Cook, Megan McJames, Alice Mckennis, Laurenne Ross, Resi Stiegler and Jackie Wiles.

The Olympics open Feb. 9 in South Korea.

Match abandoned after coach becomes ill

DARMSTADT, Germany

Kaiserslautern’s game at Darmstadt in the German second division was called off Wednesday after the visiting side’s coach suddenly became ill during the second half and was taken to a hospital.

German media reported that Kaiserslautern coach Jeff Strasser had suffered a heart attack.

Kaiserslautern gave details no details of Strasser’s condition, confirming only that he had been taken to a hospital.

In a Tweet, Darmstadt said: “Though we love football so much, there are so many more important things in life.”

The match was scoreless when it was called off.
