Youngstown council committee to meet today about snow removal

City council’s safety committee will meet today to discuss ways to improve snow removal after council members received numerous complaints from residents last week about how the city handled plowing.
Residents complained about the condition of side streets that were largely or completely ignored by street department snow plows during and after the storm.
During that snowstorm, the city used 13 plows with each driver doing 12-hour shifts, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of public works.
Each driver is given an assignment sheet with a list of streets, with main streets and then secondary streets they are supposed to plow during their shift, Shasho said.
“The drivers are responsible for the streets on those routes,” he said. “We may look to restructure the routes and see if there’s any way to update them to improve plowing.”
The committee will meet at 5 p.m. today in the council caucus room on the sixth floor of city hall, 26 S. Phelps St.
Also on the agenda is a discussion on reducing violence and increasing safety at liquor establishments.
