Shrum adds Greens to staff

Josh Green and Mandy Green have joined the Youngstown State women’s soccer coaching staff. “Josh and Mandy bring a wealth of knowledge as coaches and recruiters at the highest level of NCAA women’s soccer,” YSU head coach Brian Shrum said Tuesday. Josh Green, who will serve as an assistant coach with a focus on goalkeepers, spent the last eight years as a volunteer coach at South Dakota and also made stops at Xavier (2009), Loyola Marymount in California (2008-09), Minnesota State-Mankato (2006-08), Iowa (2004-06), and Pepperdine (1996-2003). As a graduate assistant at Mankato, Green helped the MSU program become a Division II national power. The Mavericks had a 26-9-3 record, boasting three All-Central Region players and eight All-North Central Conference players. Green also helped build Pepperdine into a Top 25 team. Pepperdine made three appearances in the NCAA tournament from 1996 to 2003. He is a 1994 graduate of California Lutheran University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He completed his master’s degree in sports psychology from Minnesota State, Mankato in 2008. Mandy Green, who will serve as a volunteer assistant coach, spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at South Dakota. Notable athletes during her tenure include goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor, who ranks second in program history for wins and shutouts, and striker Corey Strang, who ranks third for game-winning goals and fifth for total points. Green coached an Academic All-American in Elena Tsakakis, eight all-Summit League honorees and 10 academic all-Summit League team members. Prior to South Dakota, Green spent the 2009 season as an assistant coach at Xavier and coached at Minnesota State-Mankato from 2003-08, where she helped build the Mavericks into a Division II power. She served as assistant coach from 2003-06 before being promoted to associate head coach in 2006. She is a 1999 graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She earned a master’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Utah in 2006.

Three earn Horizon honors

Chad Zallow and Keishawnna Burts earned Horizon League Men’s and Women’s Runner of the Week honors for their performances at the YSU College Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site. YSU’s Abby Jones set a new school and facility record for the high jump and was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week. Zallow, a junior from Warren, won the 60 hurdles and ran a strong time in 60 dash at the YSU College Invitational on Friday. In the 60 hurdles, he had time of 7.77 seconds to win the event by 0.32 seconds. In the 60 dash, he ran a time of 6.95 seconds which tied for the fastest qualifying time. He did not run in the finals with the race four minutes after the hurdles. Burts, a senior from Akron, beat a strong field in the 200m dash holding off the top four runners from Pittsburgh in the race. In the 200, she ran a time of 24.74 seconds to take first by 0.06 seconds and was one of just two runners under 25 seconds. Burts was third in the 60 dash with a time of 7.70 seconds. Jones, a junior from Franklin, Pa., continued her strong early performances by breaking her own record in the high jump.
