YOUNGSTOWN

Anthony Donofrio, a Youngstown deputy law director, is running in the Democratic primary for a Mahoning County Common Pleas Court seat.

Donofrio is seeking to replace Judge Lou D’Apolito, who cannot seek re-election this year because of the state’s age-limit law on judges.

Dan Dascenzo, a common pleas court magistrate, also is running in the Democratic primary for the seat.

Donofrio has been a practicing attorney for more than 27 years and is a former assistant county prosecutor. His private legal experience includes work at the law firm of Rossi & Rossi, as a sole practitioner and as in-house corporate counsel for B.J. Alan Co., now known as Phantom Fireworks.

Dies at hospital

YOUNGSTOWN

An inmate at the Mahoning County jail who had to be taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital this week because of complications from cancer died at the hospital.

Sheriff Jerry Greene said Keith Allen, 61, who was booked into the jail Jan. 10 on two misdemeanor charges of theft, had to be taken to the hospital because of the complications. Jail records show he died Monday while he was at the hospital.

House fire

No injuries were reported in a house fire Thursday about 5:30 p.m. at 315 E. Fifth St.

The Trumbull County 911 Center all occupants of the structure escaped unharmed from the fire which firefighters first described as a dryer fire.

A few firefighters, however, were unable to get down to check for flames because of heavy smoke and speculated it might be a full-blown fire. Further information about the blaze was not available from the 911 Center at press time.

Wellness Day

YOUNGSTOWN

Walmart stores in the Youngstown area will host the first Walmart Wellness Day event of the year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. This free health screening event provides residents an opportunity to learn valuable health information including blood glucose, blood pressure, body mass index, low-cost immunizations and in select locations, customers can also take advantage of free vision screenings.

‘Light A Candle’

NEW CASTLE, PA.

The New Castle Chapter of People Concerned for the Unborn Child “Light A Candle for Life” event at Kennedy Square will be at 6 p.m. Sunday. The prayer service will be at 7 p.m. inside at St. Mary’s Parish Center, corner of North Beaver and North streets. If it rains, the prayer service will be inside the parish center.

The lighting of the 1,000 candles in memory of America’s babies lost to abortion will be scheduled for a date later in the week.

Teacher Job Fair

CANFIELD

A dozen local school districts are looking to hire full-time and substitute teachers at the Mahoning County Regional Teacher Job Fair, noon to 3 p.m. Jan. 24, at the Joyce Brooks Center, 7300 N. Palmyra Road. Representatives from each district will be at the job fair.
