27 B.C.: Caesar Augustus is declared the first emperor of the Roman Empire by the Senate.

1547: Ivan IV of Russia (popularly known as “Ivan the Terrible”) is crowned czar.

1865: Union Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman decrees that 400,000 acres of land in the South would be divided into 40-acre lots and given to former slaves.

1920: Prohibition begins in the United States as the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution takes effect. (It was later repealed by the 21st Amendment.)

1967: Alan S. Boyd is sworn in as the first U.S. secretary of transportation.

1978: NASA names 35 candidates to fly on the space shuttle, including Sally K. Ride, who becomes America’s first woman in space, and Guion S. Bluford Jr., who becomes America’s first black astronaut in space.

1998: NASA announces that John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, will fly aboard the space shuttle later in the year.

2017: Former NASA astronaut Eugene Cernan, to date the last man to walk on the moon, dies in Houston at age 82.

1993: A federal judge in Cleveland grants the last-minute wishes of opponents of Waste Technologies Industries’ hazardous waste incinerator in East Liverpool and agrees to halt a trial burn.

Trumbull County commissioners vote 3-0 to impose two countywide sales taxes totaling 1.25 percent, with 0.5 percent of that earmarked to provide $7.5 million that would be needed for a Pentagon finance center that would provide 7,000 jobs.

Despite a $1 billion tax increase approved by the Ohio General Assembly, public education in the state faces cuts of 2 percent in state funding.

1978: Brookfield teachers go on strike after overwhelmingly rejecting the only offer received from the board of education. Because of a scheduled teacher in-service day, the district’s 2,100 students are not immediately affected.

Lizzie Patterson, 94, and Charles Pinkard, 99, are honored by the Buckeye Elks Lodge 93 as the two oldest attendees at the Elks 25th annual senior citizen banquet.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is one of eight big Ohio libraries whose holdings will be incorporated into the Ohio College Library Center in Columbus.

1968: James E. O’Brien, Mahoning County welfare director, says all four extended nursing home facilities in the county have waiting lists for Medicare patients, but the county nursing home cannot take more patients because the state has capped reimbursement at $180 per month per patient.

Snow buries the state in the worst snowstorm of the winter. The storm causes 21 deaths, most from heart attacks after snow shoveling.

The Steel City Parents League asks the Youngstown Board of Education to adopt integrated textbooks, hire more black teachers and build an East Side junior high school.

1943: The Mahoning County school lunch program, which provides 4,276 meals daily, will be continued after Jan 30, even though WPA aid will be lost by then.

The three men who had remained at large after escaping from the Mahoning County Jail have been captured.

Adam Bobst Turner of Ohltown Road, Canfield, celebrates his 100th birthday. He has 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
