Penguins stumble early against Wright St.

The Youngstown State women’s basketball team stumbled out of the gate and never recovered against Wright State for Monday’s 73-50 loss.

YSU (5-14, 3-3 in the Horizon League) has lost five of its last six games and is 1-8 on the road.

The Raiders (14-4, 5-1) took an 18-9 lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back.

Sarah Cash had a team-high 12 points and four rebounds. Nikki Arbanas was the only other Penguin in double figures with 11 point, which came while going three for seven from the three-point line.

The rest of the starting five combined for 13 points. Indiya Benjamin was one of 11 from the field for two points. Anne Secrest put up four points in 11 minutes and Chelsea Olson was one of five from three for seven points.

As a team, YSU shot 38.8 percent from the floor and was 6 of 23 from three.

The Penguins were out rebounded 45-28 and turned over the ball 19 times.

Wright State was two for 19 from three, but made up for it with 48 points in the paint.

Chelsea Welch led Wright State with 23 points and two Raiders’ players finished with double doubles. Emily Vogelpolhl had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Lexi Smith added 10 points and 11 rebounds. Symone Simmons put up 10 points.

The Penguins travel to Cleveland State (12-6, 4-3) on Saturday.
