Volleyball course begins March 6

The Trumbull Career and Technical Center will be the site of a Volleyball Coaches School course beginning March 6. The course will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. for five weeks.

The 20 hours of instruction will cover all aspects of the sport, for every level of coaching. For more information or to register, call 330-847-0503.

Pikunas is second at Arizona invitational

For the second straight year, University of Akron junior Danielle Nicholson won the Rio Verde Invitational, while freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Boardman) claimed individual runner-up honors.

The Akron women’s golf team finished runner-up with a 903 (+39) tournament total on Sunday.

In the final round, Pikunas advanced two spots on the leader board to finish second overall with a 74 (+2) final round. She collected 13 pars, two birdies, a bogey, and a double bogey.

For the tournament, Pikunas carded a 220 (+4) total on rounds of 71 (-1), 75 (+3), and 74 (+2).

Phantoms camp set for June 2-3

The Youngstown Phantoms will host their third annual USHL Futures Camp on June 2-3 at the Deep Freeze / Extreme Air facility on McClurg Road.

The Phantoms’ 2018 USHL Futures Camp is open to any interested player who was born in 2003 and 2004.

Players and parents will be able to register for the camp on-line through a link on the Youngstown Phantoms’ team web-site at www.youngstownphantoms.com .

The camp will be a first-come, first-served basis for registration.

Martinez, Red Sox finalize 5-year pact

FORT MYERS, Fla.

It took an extra week but the Red Sox finally got the big bat for the middle of their lineup they lacked last season.

Slugger J.D. Martinez and the Red Sox finalized a $110 million, five-year contract on Monday, a week after the sides agreed to the deal pending a physical.

“It’s been a long process. I’m happy to just put everything behind me and be here today,” said Martinez, flanked by his agent Scott Boras and Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, at a Monday morning news conference at Boston’s spring training complex.

“I’m excited for the task at hand. I know this historic franchise and this organization, winning is No. 1 and bringing a championship back to Boston is the ultimate goal. I’m happy to now be a part of it.”

Martinez gets $27.5 million in each of the next two seasons, there is a $23.75 million player option for 2020 with a $2.5 million buyout and $19,375,000 player options for 2021 and 2022.

Abuse victims help unveil 10-bill package

LANSING, Mich.

Victims of imprisoned former sports doctor Larry Nassar helped unveil what they described Monday as a sweeping rewrite of Michigan laws related to childhood sexual abuse, saying the changes would ease the ability to stop abuse and bring justice to survivors.

Included in the bipartisan 10-bill package is a proposal to drastically lengthen the time limit for victims of sexual assault to sue. Survivors who were minors at the time of abuse now generally must file a civil lawsuit in state court by their 19th birthday, though it is longer if they sue under federal laws. Under the legislation, minor victims could sue up until their 48th birthday.

The measures were unveiled the same day the U.S. Education Department announced a new investigation of Michigan State University, where Nassar was employed for decades and which has been accused of mishandling complaints that enabled him to continue molesting patients under the guise of treatment. He also worked at USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians and is the sport’s governing body.
