YSU to host bridge building competition

YOUNGSTOWN

Students from area high schools will participate in the 11th annual Mahoning Valley miniature bridge building competition Tuesday in Youngstown State University’s Kilcawley Center. Registration will be from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m. and bridge building will begin at 8:30 a.m. The goal of the competition is to promote civil engineering as a career choice while providing area students the opportunity to apply knowledge in a real world application. The event involves the design and construction of a balsa wood bridge followed by a load testing until failure. The winning bridge is chosen based on meeting design criteria and the most efficient load carrying capacity to structure weight ratio. All Mahoning and Trumbull county high school students have been invited to participate. For information, visit www.mvmbbc.org.
