Struthers students compete in flipping-bottle contest

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes students at Struthers Middle School spent some time flipping bottles for sport.

More than 100 students in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grade competed in a water bottle-flipping competition Friday.

Water bottle flipping is a popular fad in which people flip half-full bottles of water until they land right-side up.

Jason Evinsky, fifth-grade student who made it into the second round of the challenge, said before Friday he had only heard of bottle flipping once.

“I’ve never really done it before,” he said. “I usually stink at everything but Pokemon games – and now this.”

Fellow fifth-grader Isaac Wolfe said he doesn’t take it too seriously and that the challenge is just fun.

“I don’t really practice. I just do it,” he said.

Cadence Shorthouse, fifth-grader and third-round contestant, said she was just happy to have the variety of social activities being in the FCA club provides.

Mya Robledo, fifth-grade competition spectator, said she always does the water-bottle flipping competition when she’s at home, so her talent would’ve outdone the other students.

“It’s just cool to be a part of it,” she said.

Mya said her favorite part of the challenge, however, was the free soda pop.

The Pepsi Co. of Youngstown partnered with the FCA to host the event which provided refreshments for attendees.

Challenge winners of the single-elimination tournament were fifth-grader Randy Spencer; sixth-grader Allen Cooper; and seventh- and eighth-grade combined challenge winner Nico Farina.

Pepsi also donated the half-filled Aquafina water bottles for the competition.
