‘Maus’ comic creator to speak at university

Art Spiegelman, creator of the groundbreaking graphic novel “Maus,” will speak at Kent State University on March 6 at 7 p.m.

His lecture, titled “Comix, Jews ’n Art – Dun’t Esk,” will be in the Kent Student Center Kiva and is free to the public.

“Maus” is an account of the Holocaust written in comics form. Published in 1991, it received international acclaim, earning Spiegelman a special Pulitzer Prize. “Maus” also has been credited for elevating comics as an art form.

It tells the story of the Holocaust told through interviews between Spiegelman and his father, a Polish Jew who immigrated to the United States in 1951 after surviving the Holocaust.

Spiegelman also created some of the iconic and controversial covers for The New Yorker, where he worked from 1992-2001, and also created the Garbage Pail Kids for Topps Trading Cards.

Roots, Americana music at festival

Montani Semper Liberi – a three- day celebration of music, the arts and cultural heritage – will return to the Oak Glen High School complex, 88 Golden Bear Drive, March 9-11.

It will feature nationally known Roots and Americana touring artists, as well as a number of local and regional acts, with 16 performances spread out over four sessions during the three days.

Headliners will include Hackensaw Boys, The War and Treaty, Cedric Burnside Project, Hillbilly Gypsies, Molly Tuttle, Possessed by Paul James, Dori Freeman and the Early Mays.

Several tri-state area favorites are also on the bill, including: Sharyn Vinci and da Boyz, the Mojo Trio, Echo Valley, Doug Smith, Mulefactory, Ben Flint and the Wilson Mountain Ramblers.
