Pair arrested on gun charges

Kashmere Womack’s previous court experience before his arraignment Tuesday on gun charges could be considered pleasant.

The 24-year-old Megan Circle man took a misdemeanor charge of public indecency to trial in municipal court and was found not guilty Feb. 5.

Tuesday, however, he was slapped with a $20,000 bond by Judge Carla Baldwin on charges of carrying concealed weapons, being a felon in possession of a firearm, obstructing official business and possession of drugs after he was arrested with a gun after a traffic stop about 6:35 p.m. Monday on Hillman Street on the South Side.

The man police said was driving the car Womack was in, Eugene Thompkins, 26, of East Midlothian Boulevard, was given a bond of $30,000 on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

Reports said when police tried to pull the car over, both men ran. Womack was caught a short distance away and was found with suspected marijuana and a loaded .40-caliber handgun on him, reports said.

Reports said Thompkins eluded police for awhile, but officers were watching for him in the area around Anoka Drive because he is known to go to a house near there. As Thompkins was running, an officer saw him reaching for something then drop a gun in a puddle, reports said. Police later recovered the gun, a 9 mm handgun.

Reports said he was found a short time later after police pulled over a car he was spotted in at Reel Street and Canfield Road.

Thompkins told police that when he was running, he offered someone $25 if he could hide in that person’s trunk, and the person agreed.
